When Courtney Williams got the Call from Cathy Englebert, she asked, “Cathy Who?” as she didn’t have the number and couldn’t recognize the caller. Fans find this one amusing and entertaining at the same time. However, the next All-Star selection story is rather a hilarious one, not because she was a rookie selected for the annual event, but because of how she got the news.
In a recent episode of the ‘Between the Lines with Lisa Leslie’ podcast, the Mystics’ star rookie narrated the story. Many expected a simple call from the WNBA commissioner. It was rather a mix-up.
Sonia Citron Had Funny All-Star Selection Story
The WNBA rookies are making some serious noise in the league. Multiple players are impacting the games significantly and are already breaking some historic records. Some first-year players were already expected to make it into the All-Star game. But the former Notre Dame player was not expecting the same, though.
The 21-year-old star narrated how she found out about her All-Star selection and mentioned that the WNBA Commissioner didn’t call her to tell her the news.
“Before our game against Minnesota, I was checking my phone. I saw that Gabby Williams had followed and DM’ed me. I was like, ‘This is super random because I’ve never met her, never talked to her.’ And then I looked at her DM, and it was a screenshot of a voicemail from Cathy [Engelbert] to her. And in the DM, she was like, ‘Hey, Cathy called me thinking that this number was your number. I hope this isn’t how you found out, but congrats,” Citron said on the podcast (Via YT/@JWS).
Although the youngster was happy with the news, she was unsure whether it was true. Later, the Washington Mystics’ GM, Jamila Wideman, confirmed the news during the game against the Lynx. Nevertheless, the funny ‘mismanagement’ handed the star guard a story and selection to remember for her life.

Is WNBA All-Star Citron A Strong Contender For Rookie Of The Year?
The New York-born basketball player made WNBA history, becoming one of three rookie All-Star selections in 2025. Paige Bueckers and Kiki Iriafen were the other two stars selected for the gala event. Interestingly, the Rookie of the Year race is only between these three stars.

Bueckers, the top pick in the 2025 WNBA draft, delivers heavy numbers at the Wings. Citron and Iriafen are equally effective on their side. The third overall pick averages 14.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.1 steals, and two assists per game, impacting the game on both ends of the floor. Iriafen is right behind her with 12.2 pints,8.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists.
It will be interesting to watch these three top picks battle out for the award until the end of the season to cap off their impressive first year in the league.
