Napheesa Collier stepped to the podium Tuesday with fire in her eyes. The Minnesota Lynx star delivered a four-minute takedown of WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert just days after a brutal ankle injury ended her playoff run.
Collier, a five-time All-Star and WNBA Players Association vice president, spared no words. She accused the league’s top brass of ignoring player safety and inconsistent officiating. Her raw words were valid, though, as the collision left Collier out of the following Game 4.
Napheesa Collier Blasts WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert For Not Being Accountable
Just in case someone is living under a rock, Collier’s outburst stems from a Game 3 collision with Phoenix’s Alyssa Thomas that twisted her ankle and sparked chaos. Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve charged officials, was ejected, and later received a $15,000 fine and suspension.

Collier watched Game 4 from the sidelines as Minnesota fell 86-81, ending their season despite being the top seed. However, Collier’s presser built on Reeve’s fury, but she aimed higher. She praised the Mercury’s win yet pivoted to a scathing critique of the league office.
“The real threat to our league isn’t money. It isn’t ratings or even missed calls or even physical play. It’s the lack of accountability from the league office. Since I’ve been in the league, you’ve heard the constant concerns about officiating, and it has now reached levels of inconsistency that plague our sport and undermine the integrity in which it operates,” Collier said.

“Whether the league cares about the health of the players is one thing, but to also not care about the product we put on the floor is truly self-sabotage. Year after to year, the only thing that remains consistent is the lack of accountability from our leaders,” she added.
No sore loser here. Collier framed her words as a call for sustainability, not excuses. She justified her blast by detailing Engelbert’s silence after the injury. Collier got calls and texts from players league-wide, even her husband in another league. Yet Engelbert sent nothing.
Napheesa Collier Charges At The League
Collier’s direct hit on Engelbert flows into a broader assault on WNBA leadership. She declared the league boasts top players and fans, but the worst bosses worldwide. Year after year, she said, accountability vanishes.
Collier charged that suppressing voices with fines erodes trust. She shrugged off potential penalties, saying she’s earned her platform through scars and sweat. As Players Association VP and Unrivaled co-founder, she speaks for those tired of private pleas ignored.
