The WNBA and WNBPA finally agreed on a 30-day extension period to settle the new CBA deal, as the tight schedules and closed-door meetings couldn’t find a solution to the players’ association’s demands.
Many fans and analysts were concerned about the possible lockdown situation, but Commissioner Cathy Engelbert showed faith and yet stayed realistic on the dates, hinting at an extension.
Though her prediction about dates is spot on, she might be surprised to see the amount of support the WNBPA is getting on the topic. Recently, the NBA players’ association also came forward and backed the WNBPA’s demands.
NBA Players’ Association Extends Support For WNBPA
The major blockage for the conclusion of the CBA discussions is the revenue share method, where both parties propose different models for implementation. The WNBA sees incremental value in salaries that would fulfill the players’ needs, while the players demand an NBA-like revenue-sharing structure.

Amid this, the WNBPA received support from NBPA – National Basketball Players Association. The post shared on ‘X’, formerly known as Twitter, reads, “We stand with the women of @TheWNBPA as they work toward a collective bargaining agreement that reflects their value and impact both on and off the court.”

The NBA revenue sharing method includes payments on the BRI basis – basketball-related income, which includes merchandise sales and ticket sales. It is important to note that the WNBPA is not asking for what the NBA players are making (49%), but they seek a respectable percentage share.
While the WNBA is looking to incorporate a different revenue-sharing model based on ‘net revenue’ after paying off its debts, the NBPA’s support speaks volumes.
WNBPA’s Growing Support Could Put Pressure On WNBA
The players’ association had been very vocal about their demands, and they are gaining support from every major sports organization. Apart from the NBA, the NFL players’ association and the MLS Players Association showed support for the WNBPA’s demands. The MLSPA used the ‘Pay Us What You Owe Us’ slogan from the All-Star game to show their support.
Outside the sports fraternities, many legislators came forward to show their support for the WNBPA’s fight for ‘pay’. With so much support for the WNBA Players’ Association and equal criticism of the league itself, the WNBA could feel the pressure.
The new date for the CBA agreement settlement is now 30 November, and fans would be hoping for some positive news on the subject.
