The New York Liberty’s decision shook everyone as they fired HC Sandy Brondello days after the postseason exit. It was a quick decision, and a preplanned one, as some may argue. The Liberty GM, Jonathan Kolb, declared a ‘massive opportunity’ ahead after firing the HC. While he was talking about players’ additions from free agency, many coaches will also see a vacant HC position as a massive opportunity.
But as per the New York Times’ report, the front office might consider promoting its assistant coach, Sonia Raman, to a head coach position rather than searching for any new candidate.
New York Liberty Could Promote Sonia Raman To The Head Coach Position
The Liberty possesses top in-house options that are capable of taking over the Head coach position. While one close source mentioned that Raman is in Liberty’s pool of head coaching candidates, the General Manager, Jonathan Kolb, made it clear that the search will be intense for the right candidate, and he would be taking his time for the same.

Even though the side could make a move for an NBA experience coach, and their assistant coach Sonia Raman fits many other qualities the front office is looking for in its next leader.
In a midseason conversation with The Post, Raman said, “If I see something number-wise, I usually like to then look at accompanying clips to go with it and see if it’s a real number or not. And if it is, what can we take out of it? What was the context around? So, I very much like a feel and a number at times.”
The NY Liberty welcomes Sonia Raman to the coaching staff!🗽

The result-oriented and analytical coach got her first coaching job at the MIT women’s team. She led them to two Division III NCAA Tournaments, and she captured the program’s first two New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference championships in 2018 and 2019. Later, she joined the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies and helped the side improve its defense, and then worked on the offensive side with her analytical theories.
While Liberty might not get a flashy name for the post, they will undoubtedly get a focused and determined coach who will look to help them rise again to the top.
New York Liberty Must Back Its Bold Step In Firing Sandy Brondello
The franchise’s top player, Breanna Stewart, openly showed support for Sandy Brondello in the press conference. Playmaker Natasha Cloud was also vocal when she asked the interviewer and fans to show some respect to the ‘winningest coach’ in the league. Yet the franchise took the harsh step, pushing Brondello away.
This bold step shows their intent to deliver results every season and compete for the title. Now, they need to back their decision by putting a strong candidate in the position who will fulfill their aspirations and win over the players, also.
