The New York Liberty has currently found itself in a precarious position. While in the previous year, the team was celebrating its WNBA title win. Right now, the Liberty is the only team yet to appoint a new head coach.
After exiting from the playoffs, the front office shocked everyone by deciding to part ways with Sandy Brondello. And immediately, the newest expansion team, Toronto Tempo, appointed Brondello as their head coach.
Now, as most of the WNBA franchises have already decided on who will lead their team next, it is important for New York to do the same soon. And according to recent rumors, they might be hiring Kristi Toliver.
Is Kristi Toliver The Next New York Liberty Head Coach?
The WNBA season might have officially ended. But a lot of action is yet to come. With almost all the veterans entering free agency, the teams will have a golden opportunity to tactfully build their roster. Next up, the 2026 WNBA Draft is also there. Thus, a quality head coach will surely help the Liberty plan their roster for the next season better.

Initially, rumors swirled that Liberty was considering Sonia Raman as their head coach. However, now that the Seattle Storm has swooped her up, the opportunity has gone begging. Now, with the latest reports emerging from the New York Post’s Madeline Kenney, Liberty has reportedly interviewed Kristi Toliver.

Toliver is currently working with the Phoenix Mercury as an associate head coach. While Toliver was a well-known point guard during her playing days, she has built an impressive coaching resume. Back in 2021, Toliver joined the Dallas Mavericks coaching staff as an assistant under Jason Kidd.
And while she has been assisting Nate Tibbetts, the Mercury head coach has been quite full of praise for Toliver. Meanwhile, Toliver is not the only name that has been associated with the Liberty recently. The likes of Latricia Trammell, too, were speculated to take the helm.
Why Latricia Trammell Will Not Be Considered By The New York Liberty?
The Los Angeles Sparks had a very mediocre beginning to the season this year. Faltering early on, not many critics gave the Los Angeles-based side a chance. However, in the most surprising manner, the Sparks transformed their game in the second half of the season. And while they won some significant games, the franchise also made a serious playoff push.

Now, one of the biggest architects behind Sparks’ miraculous transformation was Latricia Trammell. Appointed as a special assistant midway, Trammell did wonders. Now, in recent times, a rumor circulated about Trammell joining the Liberty.
However, in reality, New York might not want Trammell. That is because the Liberty is heavily favoring coaches who have G-League or NBA experience. And while Trammell has an elaborate CV, her lack of NBA experience might make her stay with the Sparks.
