The New York Liberty are the defending champions. And they will be looking to repeat the feat once more this year. As the curtains came down on the finals last year, Sabrina Ionescu’s buzzer-beating three-peat shot handed Liberty the victory. Reeling from the loss, the Minnesota Lynx were eager to get their revenge.
And they did emerge successful in their attempt. This Wednesday, while the two teams clashed, it was a 2024 finals rematch. Unfortunately, with Liberty stacking up injuries, the game felt pretty much diminished in enthusiasm.
Injuries Plague New York Liberty Dearly
Minnesota Lynx beat the New York Liberty 100-93. En route to their victory, it was Napheesa Collier who sealed the game. She dropped a dominant 30 points, with nine rebounds, two assists, and three blocks. With such a strong showing, Collier now has five 30-point games, drawing level with A’ja Wilson at the top.
However, the limelight was not on Collier or the Lynx. With a lacklustre display, speculations about Liberty’s overall health are doing the rounds. According to analysis provided by Lucas Seehafer and The Next contributor, Liberty has racked up the most injuries this season. The team that played the finals last year, well, only three were present in Wednesday’s game.

And adding to the woes, this was the 16th game of the season in which Liberty had fielded without at least one of their big three. While Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Sabrina Ionescu form a stunning trio, they have yet to come together and reach their full potential. And there’s more. Adding to the long list of injuries, the likes of Nyara Sabally and Kennedy Burke are out nursing their knee and calf, respectively. And all of these injuries
might hinder their dreams of making it a double this time around. Meanwhile, out of all the injuries, the one to Breanna Stewart hurt Liberty the most.

New York Liberty Coach Has Some Uncertain Updates About Breanna Stewart
Fans were utterly in shock as Breanna Stewart decided to leave the field midway through against the Los Angeles Sparks. After just three minutes into the game, Stewart reportedly experienced discomfort in her right leg. This is surely a delicate situation for Liberty.
With a 7x All-Star and 2x Finals MVP tag under her belt, Stewart is one of the crucial pieces of the Liberty. Unfortunately, speaking on her health post-game, coach Sandy Brondello seemed uncertain.
“No update; hopefully she’ll be OK,” said Brondello.

Thus, with the situation looking grim, fans would be interested to see if the New York Liberty can turn their season around.
