The Dallas Wings are digging deep to keep their season alive, and their latest move brings a familiar face back to the court. Right before the Friday game against the Atlanta Dream, the Wings signed forward Amy Okonkwo on a hardship contract.
The signing came as a positive boost days after Paige Bueckers edged towards an unwanted rookie curse amid Dallas’ dismal record. While there’s no hope for a playoff birth, the team is still making sure to keep it high and happening.
Wings Sign Paige Bueckers’ UConn Teammate Amy Okonkwo On Seven
Though the Wings roster is already shorthanded, they are marred with injuries to the team’s top-liners right before the playoffs kick in. Making the most out of the timing, the Wings re-signed Okonkwo to a second seven-day hardship contract, alongside adding guard Christyn Williams on an extreme hardship deal.

For Okonkwo, a former TCU standout and Dallas-area native, this is another chance to shine alongside her former UConn teammate Bueckers. The team is making a late push to stay competitive. A couple of days ago, the Wings signed Serena Sundell on a similar hardship contract.

However, Okonkwo’s been a revelation since joining the Wings earlier this month on her first hardship contract. In just three WNBA games, she’s averaged an impressive 11.3 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.3 assists, shooting a scorching 57.7% from the field and 36.4% from three.

Additionally, her scoring has climbed each game, from eight points in her debut against the Seattle Storm on August 22 to 12 against the Golden State Valkyries. She also clocked a career-high 14 against the Connecticut Sun on August 27.
Amy Okonkwo Sounds Confident Ahead Of Wings Game
While her records look promising, the young star is equally confident heading North. Okonkwo sees a good vibe coming to her home side, where she will find her former teammate already shining this season.
“I’m local — I live 12 minutes away and train at TCU. I pride myself on staying ready. I’m thankful for the opportunity, even though it’s tragic that it comes from someone else’s injury. I’m happy I’ve been able to help and hope to keep contributing,” she said per Dallas Hoops Journal.

That readiness has made her a spark plug for a team desperate for stability. However, this comes amid the Wings’ season, which has been a battle against injuries, with eight players on the injury report for Friday’s game against the Atlanta Dream.
Bueckers, the rookie star and Okonkwo’s former UConn teammate, is questionable with an illness that sidelined her on Wednesday. Arike Ogunbowale, Tyasha Harris, JJ Quinerly, and Li Yueru are all out, with the latter two done for the season due to ACL injuries. Additionally, Luisa Geiselsöder and Aziaha James are also doubtful, leaving Dallas scrambling to field a roster.
