The Phoenix Mercury is looking to free up cap space ahead of the trade deadline. Pushing for a championship run, the Mercury are sitting comfortably at number 3. With 16 wins and 10 games, Phoenix would now want its players to step up and take the franchise home. And for that, one potential name that is doing the rounds is Marina Mabrey.
In a recent development, the team has decided not to renew their guard, Kiana Williams’ seven-day contract. Williams, who has been pivotal in contributing to moments of Mercury’s distress, will likely have to find another franchise to play for. And as for Mercury, they are looking forward to keeping their finances flexible.
Phoenix Mercury Coach Doubles Down On The Kiana Williams Situation, Teasing Marina Mabrey
Kiana Williams has averaged 11 minutes per game, with a 50% shooting record from the field. And not only that, she has also shot 35.7% from the field, making her a compelling addition to the squad. Unfortunately, recent news has surfaced that the Mercury decided to give her the golden handshake in order to further strengthen their squad.
Speaking about the situation, Phoenix Mercury coach Nate Tibbetts stated that the team loved having Williams around. However, with the trade deadline coming in, the Mercury wants to have their finances freed. Tibbetts also hinted that they might revisit the Kiana Williams situation once the trade window was over.
“Yeah, I think just as the year goes on and with the trade deadline coming up, just having financial flexibility, as the front office would say, Kian is someone that we really liked having around, and we’ll see what happens after the deadline,” said Tibbetts. (Via X)

Now, according to Yahoo Sports, a possible target for the Mercury would be Marina Mabrey. The team might be agreeing to give up Lexi Held, Natasha Mack, and up to a couple of second-round picks. And surely, the inclusion of Mabrey will be a huge boost for the team. Showing some phenomenal skills last year, Mabrey scored just under 15 points per game. Couple that with a 42.4 percent shooting from the deep. Meanwhile, if Mabrey does make it to Phoenix, she will be teaming up with DeWanna Bonner.

Marina Mabrey And DeWanna Bonner: A Power-Packed Duo Loading?
Marina Mabrey has already proved her worth. Apart from her excellent shooting abilities, Mabrey has been quite a creative playmaker. And if the trade does go through, she will be teaming up with DeWanna Bonner. After a failed stint with the Indiana Fever, Bonner has come back to Phoenix.

And immediately, she has made her mark. Playing against the Atlanta Dream, Bonner scored 18 points. And while she had an impressive 45% field goal, she took her career FGM tally to 2532. This put her in the sixth position on the all-time list of most field goals made. En route to her achievement, Bonner overtook Sylvia Fowles’ 2531 career field goals made (FGM).
