The 2025 season saw three teams making an early exit in the WNBA playoff competition, while nine teams battled out for the postseason. Three of those teams struggled to pose a challenge to the rest of the franchises. It included the Connecticut Sun as Rachid Meziane led them to 11 wins in the season.
Yet, the ESPN Power ranking placed the Dallas Wings below them, as the Sun showed a positive sign at the end of the season. The management is also putting faith in the rookie coach.
Rachid Meziane Proves His Worth With Connecticut Sun
The WNBA 2025 season began with a massive overhaul at the Connecticut Sun team, with only Marina Mabrey held back from the starting lineup. With the most significant number of rookies on the roster and a rookie coach taking command of the side, many already counted the Connecticut side out of the championship race.

The side also started slowly, with just three wins until the All-Star break. However, the return of Leila Lacan brought the side much-needed balance on both ends of the floor and coached a dependable player to draw plays. With Lacan’s performance, the star won eight games from the remaining outings.
While 11 wins would not be considered an excellent season for a WNBA team, the franchise’s GM, Morgan Tuck, was happy with the team’s performance, understanding that a rebuild takes time, and Meziane was not handed a winning roster in his first season with the team.

Yet with the rookie team and many other uncertainties around the team, the 45-year-old coach focused on improving the side’s performance and records. With this, the franchise remains ready to support him next season.
Rachid Meziane Can Expect A Tough Time Ahead
Many franchises are awaiting the CBA negotiation competition, which will enable them to add star players who become available in free agency. The situation at the Connecticut Sun is different, though. The franchise is uncertain about its relocation, with the franchise sale still pending.
Connecticut Sun ownership alleges the WNBA is blocking the sale and ‘trying to steal’ the franchise, with Boston and Houston as possible destinations for the team. Considering this, few players will be willing to commit to an unstable environment. While the current players also look to make a move.
Rachid Meziane hopes to resolve both issues before the start of the 2026 season, allowing him to focus on rebuilding the team.
