The WNBA is brimming with star power right now. And Sabrina Ionescu is undeniably at the heart of it. As the shining face of the New York Liberty, she has been redefining what it means to be a game-changer. But make no mistake. Ionescu’s brilliance goes far beyond her basketball skills. She’s fast becoming a force of nature in every sense.
The 27-year-old has been one of the best shooters of modern times. And quite expectedly, she recently won a 3-point shooting contest. But what she did with the prize money left the rookie utterly impressed. After all, splitting one’s hard-earned prize money is not everyone’s cup of tea.
Sonia Citron Shoutouts Sabrina Ionescu For Prize Money Split
The incident took place during the All-Star weekend. After winning a 3-point contest, Ionescu got presented with $62,575 prize money. $2575 was awarded by the WNBA while the remaining $60,000 was a bonus from Aflac. Instantly, a deal was made. The 27-year-old agreed to split the money playfully.
And now, it looks like Ionescu has indeed kept her promise. She did give half of her prize to Citron, making her overwhelmed. For reference, Citron’s WNBA rookie salary is $78,831. This means that the split from Sabrina Ionescu comprised almost 40% of her salary.
Interestingly, Citron was not the only one that Ionescu catered to. In a recent Instagram post from ESPNW, another rookie, Georgia Amoore, also seemed to have gotten a favor. She explained how Ionescu had paid for her coffee, making the Mystics guard elated.
The post immediately went viral. While this was an example of extreme generosity from Ionescu, it also summed up the WNBA culture of sisterhood. And there’s more. Ionescu donated the other half of the remaining prize money to her charity, SI20 Foundation. However, while on the court, Ionescu has a no-mercy approach towards her opponents.
