The New York Liberty lost some momentum, and a recent defeat against the Lynx was a wake-up call for the defending champion. The side responded well and registered a commanding 105-97 win over the Sparks. While this could be a routine win for some, it was a memorable win for HC Sandy Brondello.
With the season’s 21st win, Brondello’s win tally reached 101 with the Liberty team. This is the most important thing for any coach in the franchise’s history.
Sandy Brondello Becomes Winningest Coach For New York Liberty
After joining the NY team in 2022, Brondello led the team to the playoffs in all three seasons and is on track for a fourth season with a postseason appearance. She led the team to the WNBA championship and the Commissioner’s Cup title. The Liberty team also finished as runners-up in both titles under Brondello.
With such an illustrious and successful run, the Australian HC registered 101 wins with the NY side, surpassing Richie Adubato’s record set in 2000.
“It’s a privilege to be the head coach of the New York Liberty, an original franchise [with] the best owners in the league. But it just means I’ve had a really good team for the four years I’ve been in New York, and a lot of credit just goes to the team and just buying in the way that we want to play,” Brondello reacted to the record.

Jonquel Jones Praises HC Sandy Brondello
Winning her first title and Finals MVP award under Brondello, Jonquel Jones praised the 56-year-old coach. She highlighted Brondello’s personal touch with every player, which helped them develop. Brondello also used Jones in various roles as per the team’s requirements.
“I think she does a really good job of mixing being a really personable coach, but also knowing when to change gears and be really serious. She has the respect to be able to do both with us,” Jonquel Jones told the media.

Former Detroit player also holds records for the most wins as a coach for the Phoenix Mercury team. In her eight seasons with the Arizona team, she won 50 games. She led the Mercury side to two WNBA finals and won the title in 2014. She has never missed the playoffs since 2014, making her one of the most successful coaches in the league.
