The New York Liberty has been hogging all the limelight recently. While the team of Sabrina Ionescu and co. went on to become the 2024 WNBA champions, but the same did not happen this year.
Struggling throughout the season, the Liberty outfit failed to make it past the playoffs. And while they could not replicate last year’s success, the Liberty front office seemingly did not like how the team was functioning.
Thus, in order to address the situation, New York came up with a shocking decision. The Liberty fired head coach Sandy Brondello following their playoff exit. And while a lot of speculation has been going on, Brondello has broken the silence on the matter for the first time.
What Sandy Brondello Has To Say About Her New York Liberty Exit?
As soon as the news hit the internet, fans and critics were equally shocked. That’s because while the Liberty failed to clinch the championship, they did have a decent run, qualifying for the playoffs.

In fact, the likes of Breanna Stewart, too, fiercely defended Brondello following the exit. And up until now, Brondello kept a tight lip about her Liberty exit. But all of that changed when the former Liberty head coach made an appearance on the recent episode of the ‘Bird’s Eye View’ podcast.
Reflecting on the matter, Brondello said, “I just felt that it probably wasn’t the right fit anymore, to be quite honest. It was a leadership decision there. And I work best when I’m in a partnership, and so I felt like if that can’t be what I think it should look like… It was probably time. I had four great years [with the Liberty]. I got to win a championship, that will always be special for me… If they want to move on, that’s fine. It has been exciting since then, just navigating this different world.”

Well, such a statement is sure to ruffle a few feathers here and there. However, as the Liberty fans erupted learning about the front office’s decision, General Manager Jonathan Kolb also provided an explanation for the unexpected firing.
Jonathan Kolb Dives Deep Into The Sandy Brondello Situation
Since parting ways with the Liberty, offers came pouring in for Brondello. At one point, rumors strongly linked her to the Dallas Wings’ head coaching job for next season. However, that did not happen.
Ultimately, it was the Toronto Tempo who announced that Brondello would be taking charge of the new extension team. Meanwhile, with Brondello gone, there was an air of disappointment around the Liberty fans.

And to address the same, general manager Jonathan Kolb stated, “This decision was in no way punitive, nor was it reactive — but it’s instead rooted in being proactive. Nor was this decision based solely on the results this past season. Ultimately, we determined that evolution and innovation is what is needed at this time. This is not a results-based organization. This is not about not winning or winning. It’s about how do we position ourselves to be at the top of the league in a real sustainable way as the league does evolve in the ways we’re talking about on the floor.”
Thus, it is evident that the Sandy Brondello chapter is still lingering. And with the Liberty yet to decide on a head coach, fans cannot wait to see what happens next.
