The Washington Mystics’ 2025 season is over, with the side finishing 10th in the league standings. Although the young side made a strong push early in the season, the second half of the season cost her a place in the playoffs. Players like Kiki Iriafen, Sonia Citron and Shakira Austin were shining stars in the season.
Citron finished second in the Rookie of the Year award, while Austin shared an emotional post after winning the AP Comeback Player of the Year award. Now completing her rookie contract, the player once again took the help of social media to put forward her views on the future.
Shakira Austin Shares Cryptic Post For Her Future Time
The third overall pick in the 2022 WNBA draft, Austin had been a regular in the Mystics’ plans for the future. Although the players suffered multiple season-ending injuries, she made a strong comeback every time. Now completing her rookie contract, the player is a restricted free agent.

As per the WNBA’ restricted free agent rules, she can test free agency, but the Mystics have the option to match other team offers. The player recently shared an emotional post expressing gratitude for her time in Washington.
“This chapter closes, but my story’s still being written. Grateful,” she wrote in her post with a black heart signifying the team jersey.
She added 14 pics from the 2025 season, where the player had her best season with the Washington side. However, she earlier expressed a desire to play for the Mystics in the future.

“I don’t really know what the future looks like. You know, I love DC. I love that this is my home. This is where I got drafted. This is where you know, the first team who believed in me. So I’m excited. I know that their future is going to be amazing. They have a great prestige. They have great esteem in general, just full of life and full of joy. But I just have no idea what the next couple months will look like,” Austin said in an interview.

Shakira Austin Makes Strong Return To Action
The 2022 rookie was one of the top picks in the WNBA draft. While she had limited gametime in the first three seasons, due to injury, she was a key player for the Mystics in her final year of the rookie contract.
Starting in 30 games, the former Ole Miss player averaged nearly 13 points per game. This is her career best average with two assists and seven rebounds per game – both her best nu,bers in her short career.
The player could be a valuable addition to any team in the league and with two new expansions teams coming up, there is uncertainty over her future.
