The WNBA trade season had been one of the craziest ones, with nearly 125 players deciding their fate in the league. The Chicago Sky was also active, making some shrewd signings. Ahead of the expansion draft, the Sky made a smart move by trading with the expansion teams to protect their entire roster.
Fans were excited to see the front office’s efforts to protect the star players and hoped for the new additions. But what happened next was a complete surprise for everyone.

Chicago Sky’s Moves Post Angel Reese Era Creates Confusion
At the end of the season, the former LSU star took a strong stance, making her feelings public about the roster and the team’s needs. This caused a huge ‘issue’ as the franchise suspended the player and now, before the start of the season, traded her to the Atlanta Dream for two future first-round picks.
Even though the trade was ‘understandable’ to some extent, the next moves certainly confused many. The Sky went all in, taking the top talent from free agency. The side added high-potential, athletic Rickea Jackson, pairing her with Sparks teammate and former Champion Azura Stevens.

While the duo is well-versed with each other, the side also added former Sixth Player of the Year winner DiJonai Carrington and energetic guard Skylar Diggins. The moves certainly hit at a bigger aspiration than the rebuild phase. Jacy Sheldon’s addition proved to be one of the shrewd ones, considering her tenacity on the floor.

With that, the team managed to retain Kamila Cardoso and re-sign Courtney Vandersloot, which adds depth to the roster. While Reese was crying out for help, her departure certainly fired up the Sky front office and raised questions.
Many fans even slammed the stance the Chicago Sky took following Reese’s departure. Now, even with the former LSU star on the roster, the Sky could have easily made 80% of their recent additions and made them an even better side.
On the other hand, Reese shared an optimistic message, showing trust in her new franchise and aiming to win the championship. Even though the Sky might not be a title contender with the new additions, they are nevertheless a challenging team and better equipped than the 2025 roster. Who won the off-season battle?
Comparing the Chicago Sky Rebuild With Atlanta’s Trade For Reese
In the WNBA, the Chicago Sky and the Atlanta Dream have taken polar-opposite approaches to roster construction, creating a fascinating contrast in team building. Chicago has fully embraced a traditional, scorched-earth rebuild. By trading away assets and focusing on high-end draft capital, the Sky are betting on a long-term identity centered around a young, powerhouse frontcourt.
This strategy prioritizes internal development and chemistry over immediate win-now pressure, allowing their rookie core to grow through mistakes while establishing a physical, rebounding-heavy culture that could dominate the league in a few years.
In contrast, Atlanta’s acquisition of Angel Reese via trade represents an aggressive “all-in” move designed to accelerate their competitive timeline. While Chicago is playing the long game, Atlanta is looking to leverage a proven double-double machine to bridge the gap between playoff fringe and a legitimate contender.
Still the ones to watch.

Let’s run it back, ATL! pic.twitter.com/1SbLh6I5Kg
By bringing in a high-motor player with established star power, the Dream are prioritizing immediate defensive intensity and marketability. It is already reaping the rewards of trade, with high demand for passes despite the Dream side raising its ticket prices.
When assessing which team has better chances this season, the edge goes to Atlanta. Their roster is more seasoned, and adding a high-impact starter to an existing veteran core typically yields faster results than a ground-up rebuild.
Chicago possesses immense ceiling potential for the future, but it will likely face the typical growing pains of a young squad. Atlanta’s move suggests they are ready to win now, whereas Chicago is still meticulously laying the foundation for a new era.
