The WNBA had a revenue of $119 million back in 2023. And remember, this was significantly higher than what they accumulated back in 2019, that is, $102 million. With Caitlin Clark coming in the 2024 season, the WNBA realm burst into prominence. Since then, the league has been making record merchandise sales, hitting new media deals, and getting in more investments.
One such tie-up happened recently with Gatorade. And while their latest ad campaign had taken the internet by storm, the slogan feels a bit off. And immediately, the eagle-eyed fans did not miss a chance to hit back at the sports nutrition giant.
Fans Go Berserk After Gatorade Drops ‘Let Her Cook’ Campaign
Gatorade recently debuted its campaign ‘Let Her Cook: The W.’ The campaign focuses on women’s health and empowerment as they take the center stage in the WNBA. Gatorade has roped in WNBA stars of the past and present for this campaign. While they have Candace Parker, Elena Delle Donne, and Lisa Leslie, it also features Caitlin Clark, A’ja Wilson, and Paige Bueckers.
I don’t think Gatorade & the WNBA fully thought this marketing campaign through 😆 pic.twitter.com/7AwytPaI6r

However, despite all the buzz, the catchphrase of the ad has created quite a ripple on the internet. With the wordplay creating a frenzy, fans quickly flocked to the comments section.
“Genuinely, what were they thinking,” one fan said.

The tide is turning 😉
“No they ABSOLUTELY did. They knew this would go viral. Gets their message out there at the same time and has a bunch of people posting about it,” quipped another.

“Surely they intended this to be a double entendre for viral purposes? I can’t imagine they would make such an oversight unintentionally,” chimed in another.

With such a buzz going around, the campaign is surely a hit. Now, it is unknown whether Gatorade deliberately used wordplay. Meanwhile, with the WNBA athletes rooting for fair pay, Shannon Sharpe had a warning.
Shannon Sharpe Warns WNBA About ‘Slippery Slope’
The WNBPA is working hard towards getting a fair negotiation with the CBA. With prominent figures like Hilary Clinton and Jasmine Jordan voicing their support, Shannon Sharpe too had his opinion dropped. In a recent statement, Sharpe stated that the WNBA is going down a ‘slippery slope.’

“Pay us what you owe. That’s a slippery slope. Because I’ve been from everything that I’ve read, the WNBA has never turned a profit. Let me get this right. I’m losing money, but you want a raise, right? Something ain’t adding up,” Sharp raised questions in his podcast (Via YT/@nightcap)
Thus, with a lot going on with the WNBA at the moment, fans cannot wait to see what’s next.
