Following the removal of coach Noelle Quinn, the Seattle Storm made a swift decision to appoint Sonia Raman to the position. Seattle Storm’s Sonia Raman hire solves a major problem for the franchise, but they will have to deal with many more minor issues in the upcoming season, with the free agency and WNBA draft coming up next.
Setting them aside for a while, the franchise introduced Raman to the media, where General Manager Talisa Rhea spoke highly of the coach. Though she backed the franchise’s decision to give a ‘first-time WNBA Coach’ a chance, everyone was interested in what the 51-year-old had in her mind.
Sonia Raman Exerts Confidence In Her First Season As The Storm Coach
During her interview, the coach spoke about using her ‘analytical’ technique to work with the players and pointed out that in the current era, the side will be working with technology, data, and experts to make upgrades. She had been like that throughout her coaching career and hinted that it would be the same for her despite the change in her role.

“I’m just going to be me,” Raman said. “I realize that it’s a whole different level. But, I think just relying on who I am as a person, being genuine, being authentic, and as they say, keeping the main thing the main thing is most important.”
Sonia Raman emphasizes the role she wants to play for the next generation with the historic Seattle Storm post. He added that even though she is the first Indian-American to coach the WNBA side, she won’t be the last one.

With just four players under contract, the Storm franchise is looking to build around Dominique Malonga, and HC aligns with that idea. It seems that the former Liberty assistant coach has already planned out the path for improvement at the four-time champions.
While the decision has been very professional, there is an added benefit for the Indian-origin coach. She highlighted it during her interview with ESPN.
Seattle Storm Job Is Like Homecoming For Sonia Raman
The selection of Sonia Raman was one of the masterstrokes for the Seattle Storm, the assistant coach also got a chance to get close to her home of in-laws. The analytical coach mentioned this in her interview.

“Seattle itself as a city. It’s a premier women’s basketball city. Really rich tradition, deep support from the fan base. And I actually have really personal ties as well. My wife is from the area, so it’s kind of a homecoming for us as well,” Raman told the reporters.
Raman’s wife, Milena Flores, is a native of nearby Snohomish, Washington. The decision works perfectly for the new HC and franchise, and it will be interesting to watch how she turns the playoff contender team into a championship contender in a season or two.
