Amidst the CBA tensions brewing within the WNBA realm, the franchises are keeping their calm. Despite the players’ threats of a possible work stoppage, the teams have already begun making changes to their rosters.
Likewise, most teams have opted for a new head coach this year, and the Seattle Storm were no exception. After a mediocre performance with Noelle Quinn at the helm, the Storm wanted a fresh face to lead the side.
And while Sandy Brondello turned down Storm’s offer, they roped in the New York Liberty assistant coach, Sonia Raman. And while she has some big responsibilities to shoulder, Raman is looking to keep it simple.
Sonia Raman Wants To Be Real As Seattle Storm Looks To Bounce Back
As soon as Shams Charania revealed the news, the Storm garnered a lot of praise for Raman’s appointment. Taking on the role, Raman also made history as the first Indian-origin head coach in the WNBA. However, her path towards making Storm a fearsome side will not be easy.

The first hurdle she will have to overcome is addressing the team’s defensive woes. And with the team focusing heavily on Dominique Malonga, Raman needs to decide whether she will incorporate Malonga into a set team or build a team around her.
However, despite all the above roles looking quite daunting, Raman does not appear tense. In fact, she pointed out that she wants to keep it simple and authentic in the days to come.

“I’m just going to be me,” Raman said. “I realize that it’s a whole different level. But, I think just relying on who I am as a person, being genuine, being authentic, and as they say, keeping the main thing the main thing is most important.”

Surely, such strong words will make the Seattle fans believe in her. And more so, because Raman has termed her new role at Seattle Storm as a ‘homecoming.’
Sonia Raman Reveals Why Seattle Feels Like A Homecoming
Before her role as the Liberty assistant coach, Raman worked with the MIT women’s basketball program for over a decade. Becoming the winningest coach of the program, there is absolutely no doubt about Raman’s abilities.

Speaking on her recent role, the Storm head coach stated that her wife, Milena Flores, helped her get the job. Moreover, Flores also is a Snohomish native and played basketball for Stanford.
“And then Seattle itself as a city. It’s a premier women’s basketball city. Really rich tradition, deep support from the fan base. And I actually have really personal ties as well. My wife is from the area, so it’s kind of a homecoming for us as well,” said Raman.
