Sophie Cunningham’s injury became a hot topic in the WNBA. The Indiana Fever has already lost three players to injury in just two games, raising concerns over players’ safety. After the injury, several Fever fans lashed out at Bria Hartley. Cunningham’s mother was one of many to target the offender by calling her mean.
As for Cunningham, she waited to discuss the subject on her Podcast, Show Me Something. When the ‘tough’ girl was in pain and made an early exit, she faced an expected question: Explain the foul.
Sophie Cunningham Comments On Bria Hartley’s Foul
A photo of the Sun guard smiling while on the floor with the Fever forward in pain, holding her knees, went viral. Many fans criticized Hartley for her foul, hinting that she intentionally tried to hurt the Fever’s enforcer. But the former Mercury star cleared the air during her recent podcast video.
“I know Bria, and I’m actually really good friends with Bria. And I have been waiting to get on the pod so we can talk about this… But I don’t think that there [wasn’t any] ill intent. I think it was a basketball play, I was just in the front spot at the wrong time, she fell. Like, there’s no way she would go in there and intentionally try to hurt me,” the forward said on the Podcast.

She also added that she still loves Hartley and that they have good relations. The point guard asked fans to stop bashing the Connecticut star because it was not intentional. She even asked her mother to delete the tweet.
Her sister also commented on the foul, but instead of targeting the player, she lashed out at the league for the physicality allowed. Sophie Cunningham shared her sister’s tweet, siding with her stand on the topic.

The Fever won the hard-fought game against the Sun, and ‘Sassy Sophie’ was one of the early respondents to congratulate her side. Her teammates also showered love on the injured star, showing their significant connection.
Sophie Cunningham To Miss 2025 WNBA Season
Amid all this, the report for the 29-year-old star is concerning. As per the franchise’s recent confirmation, the star will be out for the complete season. With Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson already out for a season, the team now has three players who are definitely unavailable for the games ahead. They have signed experienced guard Shey Peddy to a hardship contract and released Kyra Lambert.
Interestingly, Cunningham had just a one-year contract with the Fever franchise, making her a free agent for the upcoming season. Looking at her popularity and impact on the team, the front office might consider signing the star back for the forthcoming season.
