The Indiana Fever’s loss against the Washington Mystics put them on the brink of an early wrap-up. That’s not what every Fever fan or player wanted to hear with less than one month remaining for the postseason. Sophie Cunningham understands the gravity of the loss and dropped strong words for the team and their opponents.
In a postgame interview, the 28-year-old forward discussed mistakes and possible ways to overcome the current tough situation. Her straightforward answers were direct messages for her teammates.
Sophie Cunningham Talks About Actions After Loss
Just recently, Cunningham garnered fans’ attention after her sarcastic GOAT remark on Caitlin Clark. Moments earlier, in this viral social media banter, the Indiana Fever lost its game against the Wings by one point, dropping to sixth position in the league standings. On Friday, they lost to the Washington Mystics by four points, dropping down one more position in the league.
Both losses came at Gainbridge Fieldhouse Arena, and now the team will play an away game against the Connecticut Sun. Ahead of the crucial game, the seven-year veteran had a message for her side and also for the opponents.
“Yeah, I just think that we’ve had some hard injuries this year. We’ve had some different lineups and roster spots. And to be frank, I don’t think that anyone else around the league thinks that we can do it anymore. But I think that our group does. And I think that we just have to get that confidence back. When we’re clicking, offensively, defensively, we’re scary. And not a lot of teams can beat us, even with the roster that we have right now,” Cunningham said in the postgame interview.
She also called out her team to be more aggressive on the floor and not allow the lower-ranked side to outwork them. The Mystics’ loss cut the gap between the two sides by a game, with the Los Angeles Sparks also lurking around the top-eight finish. Dearica Hamby had a similar message for her teammates, who responded well and defeated Wings on Friday.

Sophie Cunningham Struggles In Game Against Mystics
While the star had some strong words in the postgame interview, she herself struggled in the game. She shot 33.3% from the floor, scoring eight points in 28 minutes. In the previous three games, Missouri forward shot over 50% and looked in solid touch to fill up Caitlin Clark’s scoring numbers.

Another player who found it hard to score against the Mystics was Kelsey Mitchell. As per ‘X’ post by the Indiana Fever, Keith Mitchell became the league’s top scorer after the game against the Sky. She followed that up with a strong scoring night against the Wings (24 points), but struggled against the Mystics’ defense, converting only 31% of her shots. She even missed a layup in the final minutes of the game. HC White also spoke about reliance on Mitchell in the absence of Caitlin Clark and mentioned that the side needs to be more active.
