When it comes to speaking one’s heart out, there is no better athlete than Sophie Cunningham in the WNBA. The forward is known for her blunt and unfiltered comments. More importantly, she stands by them even after facing heat from fans, analysts, or the league.
The player revisited her comments on the WNBA’s expansion plan in her new podcast. She famously criticized Cleveland and Detroit’s choices. Both cities, a few NBA players and some fans even targeted her for an ‘insensitive comment’. She cleared her stance in the Podcast.
Sophie Cunningham Backs Her Statements On WNBA Expansion Criticism
The WNBA’s expansion plan was a surprise for everyone amid the discussions of the new CBA deal. When asked about it, the 28-year-old mentioned that it’s good that the league is touching new markets, but she was not happy about the choices of Detroit and Cleveland for the expansion. She would prefer Miami, Nashville, or Kansas City.
With fans cracking down on her, she explained that it’s not about the cities, but from a business point of view. The topic again popped up during her new podcast, “Show Me Something”. She stayed firm on her stance.
“I am someone who says what everyone else is thinking or talking about. Not just with the refs, but with Detroit, with Cleveland. I want people to hear what I just said. I am the only one. But if you ask our league, they feel the same exact way,” The Fever Forward said on the Podcast.
She even mentioned that she would not apologize for her words. She said what she believed in. Cleveland will join the league in 2028, while the Detroit franchise will debut in 2029. The third and final expansion team will be from Philadelphia, which will be the 18th side and join in 2030.

Sophie Cunningham Making Impact On And Off The Court
The Indiana Fever made a bold move by acquiring the forward in a four-team trade. The former Mercury forward was an influential player with elite shooting ability and a strong defensive presence. The star continued her run with her new team. She averages nearly eight points, four rebounds, and one steal with over 44% accuracy on the field.

Her impact is more than those stats though. She is an enforcer on the court and energizes her team at both ends of the field. She played sixth most minutes for the side, and has even started five games.
Off the court, the 2019 rookie is a fan favorite. She landed deals with fast-food chain Arby’s, home security company Ring, and Adidas since joining the Indiana team. She also received an offer to join an All-female wrestling circuit, Women of Wrestling (WOW). Now with her debut podcast, she will open up on different topics with the most famous franchise in the league.
