Sophie Cunningham became popular for her aggressive antics on the court. Joining the Indiana Fever, the 29-year-old’s tendency to protect her teammates earned her the nickname of ‘enforcer.’
And she has also been quite upfront about her opinions, too. Only recently, Cunningham issued a grim outlook for the 2026 WNBA season. However, despite all the hard exterior, fans often make a big mistake about the WNBA players.
They think that a player’s on-court persona is how the athlete actually is in real life. And it was exactly what Cunningham wanted to clarify.
Sophie Cunningham Wants Fans To Look At WNBA Players With A Fresh Perspective
The Indiana Fever star might have had some really rough interactions on the court. However, according to Cunningham, her actions on the court should not influence how fans perceive her in real life.

In a recent interview with Front Office Sports, the Fever star urged the fans to try and get to know the players more. She pointed out, saying, “I’m not just speaking for myself, I think I’m speaking on behalf probably the whole league; that when people see us competing, and trying to fight to do anything it takes to win, because this is hard, hard league, they automatically think that’s what you’re like off the court.”

“People need to get to know us players more. And I think if they do, they fall in love with us. And so judging the competitive side of us, compared to our off-court [side],” she added.
Surely, the likes of Cunningham and Angel Reese have been subjected to a lot of flak recently. And such a statement coming from the Fever star might really help fans to come in with an open mind. Meanwhile, as the WNBA is going through a rough patch, Cunningham recently opened up about her take on Project B.
Sophie Cunningham Gives The Nod On Playing For Project B
Project B has been the talk of the town in the WNBA. With things looking grim with the ongoing CBA negotiations reaching a stalemate, several athletes have already switched. While the likes of Alyssa Thomas have received a lot of flak for signing with Project B, Cunningham is willing to accept the multi-million dollar contract from the Saudi-backed league.

Cunningham said, “I don’t know too much about it. You know, you see stuff on social media, but I also know how social media goes. So you got to take it with a grain of salt. But, you know, if people are going to be paying you multi-million dollar deals, why would you not?”
