Amid the CBA standoff, the WNBA is facing another challenge in the form of Project B, which aims to capitalise on the popularity of WNBA players and lure them away from the league with lucrative pay and even equity sharing. Nneka Ogwumike and Alyssa Thomas were two big names who joined the new 5-on-5 league, and Cunningham could be the next one.
WNBA fans threw shade at Alyssa Thomas for joining Project B, calling her a “hypocrite”; they even targeted the WNBPA president, Ogwumike, who was the first player to make the bold move, but they might not say anything to the Fever forward, as she already declared her intention on the topic.
Sophie Cunningham Talks About The Possibility Of Joining Project B
The former Mercury star was at the Annika Pro Am LPGA event, where FOS’s representative had a chance to catch up with her for an exclusive interview. As expected, the fans got ‘unfiltered’ responses from her as she was clear and precise on many topics.

On the CBA standoff, Cunningham issues a grim outlook for the 2026 WNBA season, citing considerable uncertainty surrounding its feasibility. Similarly, she was candid about the possibility of joining Project B. “I don’t know too much about it. You know, you see stuff on social media, but I also know how social media goes. So you got to take it with a grain of salt. But, you know, if people are going to be paying you multi-million dollar deals, why would you not?” Cunningham said.

Even though the contracts of Ogwumike or AT’s players are not public yet, according to reports, Project B is offering around $2 million as a base salary to the players and also handing out equity shares, which are key demands in the CBA negotiations. If the WNBA’s existence is in question, then the 29-year-old’s decision to join the Project B might be justifiable.
