It’s already been two weeks since the WNBA and WNBPA agreed on a 30-day extension. The primary reason for the extension was to prevent a work stoppage.
However, according to Sophie Cunningham’s recent interview, the work appears to be progressing at a slow pace, and the player herself has raised concerns over the upcoming season.
With Project B making announcements of top player signings, the Unrivalled league expansion, and hype around the second season, the CBA issue should have been the primary focus for the league and the players’ association. But there are no updates yet.
Sophie Cunningham Uncertain About 2026 WNBA Season
The former Missouri player is famous for her ‘no nonsense’ talk and puts forward her point bluntly. In a recent exclusive interview with Front Office Sports, the Fever forward talked about the ‘uncertain future of the WNBA.

“I know our execs are talking with their people every single day. I don’t think there’s been much movement. I think at least there’s communication. So that’s the biggest thing for us. But, normally we don’t have meetings unless something big is happening or if they need to update us on what they’re talking about,” Cunningham told FOS.

Many people expected at least one meeting within the first 15 days of the extension, but there have been no clear updates on this, which hints at the slow-paced work that the 29-year-old forward was referring to. Early in October, Cunningham fired shots at the league authorities for the delay, and it seems that she is not holding back once again.
Fans blamed Napheesa Collier as the WNBA-WNBPA were unlikely to agree on a CBA by the October 31 deadline. And right now, there are similar situations even with the 30-day extension. The versatile forward touched on the topic in her recent podcast episode.
Sophie Cunningham Talks About Potential Unrivaled Conflict Tied To WNBA Stars’ Leadership Roles
Another point that raised questions around the CBA standoff is the conflict of interest following the Unrivaled and Project B ties. Vice presidents Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart run the Unrivaled league, while the president, Nneka Ogwumike, signed with Project B. Although all three players denied any such conflict, the Fever forward put forward a ‘slight’ chance in her podcast.
“This is good, this is kind of some tea. So both of [Collier and Stewart], great f****** players, right? Like, phenomenal. But they are also a part of [the WNBA’s] exec board. And so that could be a little conflict of interest, because W and Unrivaled. That’s why there’s some conflict of interest, a little bit. So that’s interesting,” said Cunningham.
The updates and news around the CBA negotiations are not encouraging for sure, but the WNBA fans would be hoping to get things sorted within the stipulated time for the new season, considering the addition of new teams, the exciting draft, the free agency market, and the rise of the league.
