Sophie Cunningham plays with an aggressive edge on the court. Playing for the Indiana Fever, Cunningham soon became a fan favorite. Her friendship with Caitlin Clark, too, garnered a lot of attention. However, Clark missed the previous season with an injury, which cut their on-court chemistry short.
As expected, fans are looking to see more of the duo play together in the upcoming season. However, with the CBA deal going haywire, the chances of the league going through a work stoppage have increased drastically. And as the negotiations are still ongoing, Cunningham could not help but lash out at the league.

Sophie Cunningham Frustrated With How The WNBA Is Dealing With The Players
It has been months since the players have been asking for better revenue sharing. Till now, the league has come up with two different CBA proposals. Unfortunately, both times, the WNBPA rejected the contracts. As a result, officials have pushed the deadline back three times now.
Venting out her frustrations on an episode of the ‘Show Me Something’ podcast, Cunningham stated, “Our negotiation and all that, how that’s going, it’s like we’re the laughing stock of sports right now. Negotiations are in process … in hopes of getting things moving because they have not been moving, at all. Both sides are kinda getting frustrated, but I know us players are holding our ground, so it should be interesting.”
One of the biggest drawbacks of the stalled CBA negotiations has been free agency. While it was supposed to begin from mid-January, no news of the same has been reported as of now. Owing to such a delay, the players involved with the free agency are likely to suffer significant financial damage. Meanwhile, as the current WNBA commissioner has let the players down, Cunningham wants to take up the position in the future.

Sophie Cunningham To Run For The WNBA Commissioner?

At present, the WNBA community universally despises Cathy Engelbert. With the likes of Napheesa Collier calling her out due to alleged lack of accountability, Cunningham wants to bring in a change. In a recent discussion, the Fever star said she could become the commissioner in the future and set an example of how to do things the right way.
“So here’s my thing. And I think maybe I’m speaking this into existence, people are probably gonna make fun of me, but I have seen the league when it hasn’t had this [CBA frustration], and I’m in the process of seeing where this thing could be. And I think that I truly do, I’m learning the business, I’m learning the sport. I think that one day, it would be so fun to be the commissioner,” the Fever star said on the podcast.
Thus, with things getting much worse, fans cannot wait to find out how the 2026 season pans out.
