At this point, the Indiana Fever are one of the most closely bonded teams in the WNBA. And that means the Indianapolis players, the ones who built it.
And just like that, Sophie Cunningham recently opened up about a lighter side of her time with Caitlin Clark during the 2025 Fever’s playoff run.
The star guard recalled a playful bench banter that took place between her best buddy sometime around this season.

Sophie Cunningham Calls Caitlin Clark “Feisty” Over Bench Moments
Cunningham described Clark as “feisty”, not in a harsh way, but in a spirited, fun-loving sense. She said Clark’s energy and playful attitude on the bench created some of the most memorable off-court moments of the season.
One such moment came right before a playoff game, when the Iowa alum had so much fun with Sophie on the bench.
“Man, she [Caitlin Clark] is a piece. Everyone thinks I’m the feisty, sassy one. Absolutely not. I’ve had such a fun year with C,” Cunningham said. “We were quite the duo on the bench who got in trouble a couple of times by the refs, but that’s no surprise. But you know, it’s cool.”

“She thinks of the game at such an elite level. And so we were definitely talking strategy, helping out our teammates, but also having a lot of fun cheering them on on the sideline,” Cunningham added.
However, it was not a well-kept secret how great buddies the two are. It all started with Cunningham jumping in defense of her teammate. It earned her the Caitlin Clark enforcer tag that Cunningham went on to cash in full swing.
Sophie Cunningham Reveals Caitlin Clark’s Clear Answer To Project B Recruitment
Off the court, Cunningham also tried to enlist Clark in a rising offseason opportunity at Project B, a planned international women’s basketball league set to launch in 2026.
Cunningham said she reached out to her teammate to see if she’d consider joining. Caitlin Clark’s response, Cunningham revealed, was firm and direct as she went on to decline it.
The reason given, however, was simple, as Clark wants to focus on her return to the WNBA and her commitments with the Fever and potentially national-team basketball, rather than jumping into a new league during the offseason.
