Sophie Cunningham and the whole of the Indiana Fever locker room are charged up. In a recent comment, the 28-year-old enforcer claimed that their opponents are angry with their playoff progression. With the chances of Indiana making it past the regular season looking slim, they are now fighting for the title. And that too, with half of the team back in the locker room. It all started with the groin injury of Caitlin Clark. And slowly things took a grim turn.
The team lost Cunningham, Sydney Colson, Aari McDonald, and others due to injuries. While it looked like things were going from bad to worse, the former Missouri Tigers star has highlighted the good part.
Sophie Cunningham Happy With Change In Role Post Her Season-Ending Injury
Cunningham could not hide her true feelings after Fever won Game 3 against the Atlanta Dream. However, this was not the case when the Fever guard suffered the injury. With the Fever struggling to push for the playoffs, the ‘enforcer’ expressed how painful it was to sit out on the sidelines and watch the game. But now, it looks like that was not an entirely bad deal after all.

The 29-year-old recently pointed out that while sitting on the sidelines, she is glad that she did not fade away. In fact, Cunningham was clever enough to find a new role for herself. And that was one of a ‘bench coach.’ “That’s something that has actually been huge… Like just having a voice, just doing reminders, just pouring confidence into people. Because at this point, I think, everyone knows what the other team can do. And now it’s just like, mentally making sure like we’re there,” Cunningham said on an episode of the ‘Show Me Something’ podcast.

Surely, the crowd, too, had loved the manner in which the 29-year-old had embraced the role. The Fever star has been found to be getting involved just in the manner in which she would have done if she were playing. Meanwhile, as the Fever marches on, Cunningham recently made a joke about finding herself a ‘new’ team.
Sophie Cunningham Finds ‘New Team’ Amidst Injury Rehab
Cunningham had her moments in this year’s WNBA. While everyone was waiting for her to carry the fever after Clark’s injury, she hit a standstill after August 17. After a couple of days, the MRI scan revealed an injured MCL that forced her out for the rest of the season. Thus, with no other options left, Cunningham is focusing on completing her rehabilitation properly. And while doing so, the WNBA veteran star decided to have a light-hearted exchange.

Posting a recent health update via Instagram, cameras caught Cunningham wearing a brace on her right knee. Not able to walk on her own, the Fever star was walking with the support of a couple of medical staff. And this is where Cunningham thought about making things funny. Staring directly at the camera, the 29-year-old jokingly said, “What’s up guys? This is my new team, the medical staff!”
Surely, it is evident that Cunningham is itching to get back to the hardwood. But until she does, her new role as the bench coach will surely give her the much-needed adrenaline rush as the Fever marches on.
