Sophie Cunningham’s first year in Indiana left a good impression on the Fever faithful. The fiery guard, traded from the Phoenix Mercury in a blockbuster offseason deal, quickly cashed in on Caitlin Clark’s enforcer role and became a fan favorite.
But even if the Indianapolis fans are not ready, this might not be the case forever. After the season is over for the Fever, Cunningham has recently hinted at a curious development with her cheeky social media post.
Sophie Cunningham Hints At Latest Development On Free Agency
For the guard who started her season with the Fever on high hopes, it ended abruptly with a torn MCL in August, sidelining her for the playoffs as the team pushed the Las Vegas Aces to five games in the semifinals. Now, as an unrestricted free agent, Cunningham dropped a cryptic social media hint about her next move, stirring speculation amid a swirling CBA storm.

“Packing and moving out…. So cereal for dinner in a measuring bowl it is” she wrote, alongside a photo of her holding a glass bowl.

This tease arrives at a tense juncture for the WNBA. With the collective bargaining agreement expiring on October 31. And while players like Cunningham have already voiced frustrations over pay and protections, a potential lockout is almost promised.

While she did not clarify what the Missouri alum really meant by “moving out,” a transition is underway. As the Fever retain just Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and Makayla Timpson for 2026, Cunningham’s future looms large. However, her team’s best friend, Clark, has urged Cunningham to re-sign with the Fever.
Sophie Cunningham’s WNBA Lockout Warning Gets Angel McCoughtry’s Approval
While Cunningham’s free agency tease may put some Indiana fans on edge, her subtle hints dovetail with her stark CBA warning. And days after that, ex-WNBA star Angel McCoughtry validated on the Good Follow podcast.
“From what I’ve heard… it’s disheartening… And just know that there could possibly be a lockout,” McCoughtry said, echoing Cunningham’s Thursday bombshell.
Everlier, during exit interviews, Cunningham didn’t sugarcoat what was coming at her.
“There’s a potential lockout because I promise you we are not going to play until they give us what we deserve.” She called it “the dumbest basketball decision ever,” given record attendance, ratings, and $200 million in projected 2025 revenue.
