The Indiana Fever and Dallas Wings put on a show last Friday. Two of the most exciting franchises of the league went head-to-head last week. While Fever pulled out an 88-78 win over the shorthanded Wings, Sophie Cunningham and Paige Bueckers had an honest chit-chat between plays.
For Dallas, their rookie phenom Bueckers put out the best for her side and scored 22 points during 34 minutes of her playing time. Despite her efforts, none of her other teammates were able to clock a double-digit mark against the Caitlin Clark-less Fever. Although she did make a ball travel that went unnoticed, and no whistles were blown.
Sophie Cunningham Shares Paige Bueckers’ Foul Story
During a recent episode of her podcast, Show Me Something, Cunningham spilled the tea on a hilarious exchange with Bueckers. The star guard, who’s been a defensive spark for the 16-12 Fever, was tasked with guarding the red-hot Bueckers. Their back-and-forth on the court turned into an honest moment.
Cunningham found herself in a battle with Paige Bueckers, who’s tearing it up as a rookie. In the second half, Bueckers pulled off a slick step-through move for a banked shot. The Fever star, right on her, thought it looked a bit off.
“We were running back and she goes, ‘hey, I traveled on that last one’… I was like, ‘you know, I kind of thought you did.’ But, we were just, like, talking it up or something and then, like, I fouled but it wasn’t a foul. They called it. And I told our coaches to challenge it. I think she (Bueckers) was like, ‘yeah, they should have challenged that.’ I was like, ‘I know.’ I was like, ‘they never listen to me,’” Sophie narrated the whole sequence (via YouTube/Show Me Something).

Bueckers’ honesty cracked Cunningham up, and their playful banter showed the respect between them. Additionally, she also praised Bueckers’ leadership and team spirit. However, it would be worth seeing how they suit up against each other in the next game up.

Sophie Cunningham’s Stats Look Promising Before Next Wings Matchup
The Fever-Wings rematch on August 12 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse is set to be a good one. Cunningham, averaging 7.5 points and 3.9 rebounds, has been a defensive anchor for Indiana, especially protecting Clark.

The Wings, despite their record, have a star in Bueckers. She’s drawing comparisons to UConn greats. Meanwhile, the Fever are pushing for a playoff spot and are currently sitting sixth in the standings. Additionally, Cunningham’s defensive play will be key against Bueckers’ scoring flair. With both teams going back and forth with injuries, only a fitting roster could help them.
