Sophie Cunningham has emerged as quite a character this season. Joining the Fever at the beginning of the year, Cunningham gained popularity for her physical play. However, as her season was cut short by a knee injury, the 29-year-old had to watch her team perform from the sidelines. And while Caitlin Clark has urged Cunningham to re-sign with Indiana, the ‘enforcer’ has not decided anything concrete as of now. But that is not stopping her from sharing some hilarious stories.
Surely, it was painful for Cunningham to sit out and watch her team toil. After all, post-Clark’s injury, the onus was on the 29-year-old to take Fever over the line. And as she was sitting helplessly, Cunningham did something that could have seriously impacted her recovery.
Sophie Cunningham Not Wearing Knee Casts, And Her Doctor Doesn’t Know
The Fever star has always been a vibrant person. Despite being on the sidelines, Cunningham hyped up Indiana after forcing Game 5 against the Aces in the semifinals. And now, with another new season coming up, the curiosity around her knee injury has been growing. Thus, in a recent episode of the ‘Show Me Something’ podcast, the 29-year-old had some briefings for her fans. Surprisingly, the star WNBA guard stated that she has stopped wearing her cast. That too, without her doctor approving of it!

“I’m not the most patient person. I do pray for patience, but I kind of let myself out of that cast without a doctor’s order. I had my check-up and they’re like, ‘You’re progressing really well and you look awesome.’ I said, ‘Say less,’” said Cunningham.
Surely, the news of her progress will come as a relief for her fans. But removing the cast without the authorization of a doctor will surely keep the tensions high. Meanwhile, the entire WNBA realm is reeling with the Cathy Engelbert fiasco. And Cunningham recently admitted to being harsh towards the WNBA commissioner.
Sophie Cunningham Admittedly Used Harsh Words Towards Cathy Engelbert
It all started with Napheesa Collier lashing out at the WNBA commissioner. After Lynx’s exit from the tournament, Collier pointed out how the WNBA authority was not at all concerned about the athletes’ well-being. She also labeled the league’s leadership as the ‘worst’ while charging Engelbert with a lack of accountability. And soon after Collier’s outburst, more and more players came up. Criticizing Engelbert for her take on Clark, Cunningham had some words for the league commissioner. And the Fever star was not shy in admitting that she used a harsh stance.

“I think that — I’m not going back on what I said, but I might have been a little harsh on how I said it. But you know what? It’s also me. I can admit when I’m wrong. Just think what I said was valid and a lot of people agree with it, but maybe how I said it could’ve been better. I mean all of that, just maybe shouldn’t have cussed… I think when I cuss it makes it less — like, it’s uneducated,” Cunningham said.
Thus, with Cunningham not yet confirming her team for the next season, the interest is rising. And with the free agency coming up, fans are eager to see whether the enforcer will switch teams.
