DeWanna Bonner received hostile treatment as she returned to the Gainbridge Fieldhouse as a Phoenix Mercury player. Fans booed her every time she touched the ball. While the Mercury players were not happy about it, Sophie Cunningham understood the sentiments.
In her latest episode of the ‘Show Me Something,’ the Fever star opened up about DB’s exit. She admitted that she feels the former star should have retired after the Fever exit.
Sophie Cunningham Speaks About DeWanna Bonner’s Exit
DeWanna Bonner was the voice of the locker room for HC Stephanie White. At least the coach presumed her to lead the way for the young side. But after just seven games, she left the team stranded. Moreover, she joined a strong competitor and her former team, the Phoenix Mercury.
Fans were upset about it and let the player know about their feelings when she visited the Indiana home court. The 28-year-old forward, who joined DB in Fever, opened up about her exit and what was missing.
“I’m still rooting for her. I want her to end her career and be happy, but I also think like, it’s OK to be professional about it. Send a text to your teammates, send a text like, ‘Hey, love you guys,’ or you don’t even have to say, ‘Love you guys.’ Say, ‘Sorry this didn’t work out, good luck…’ There’s a way to handle that, I think,” Cunningham said in the ‘Show Me Something’ podcast.
Sophie Cunningham added that she loves Hall of Famer Bonner, but mentioned that the 37-year-old star had a great career and should have retired after leaving the Fever team. They both played at the Phoenix Mercury, with Bonner welcoming the rookie from Missouri in 2019.
Since DB’s departure, the Indiana team has maintained a healthy record and is currently in fifth place with a 17-13 record.

Sophie Cunningham’s Podcast Attracted $1500 Fine
‘Sassy Sophie’ has been unfiltered on the podcast. She spoke in detail about many topics. In the first episode, the 28-year-old star talked about Caitlin Clark’s impact on the team and league, calling her the face of the WNBA. But her comments on the officiating caught the league’s ‘ears’.

She mentioned that the officiating in the league is uneven. Joking about being a referee, she noted that she would have flopped as a referee. But her criticism attracted $1500 fine. She told the whole story in episode 2 of the podcast and laughed about it.
