It’s just three months with the Indiana Fever team, and Sophie Cunningham is already making her presence felt. The veteran forward was one of the high-profile signings before the 2025 season. She was excited to join the young team with Caitlin Clark leading the charge. Sadly, she could play in just 12 games with the Iowa star. The former Mercury star is now preparing for more formidable challenges without the top playmaker.
After a big win over the Las Vegas Aces, the 28-year-old forward attended the post-game press conference. While she praised the players’ role in the win, her update on CC’s injury raised hopes.
Sophie Cunningham Provides Caitlin Clark’s Injury Update
The 2015 McDonald’s All-American delivered an excellent performance against the 2023 WNBA champs at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse arena on July 24. She scored 15 points and grabbed three rebounds, starting the game for the home side. Her clutch baskets helped the side overcome the halftime deficit and record a much-needed win over A’ja Wilson and co.
The forward looked relaxed and ready for the question during the press conference. When an interviewer asked her take on the team’s leading assist maker’s absence, she was ready with the answer.
“Yeah, I don’t think that it affects us anymore. We put out a statement today that, you know, she’s day-to-day, and so we know that as a team, and so that’s helpful to mentally prepare. But I really do think that, you know, if we have Caitlin, great, and we know how to play with her. If we don’t have Caitlin, great. We know how to play without her, and I think that’s just so important,” Cunningham Said in the post-game press conference. (Via YT/IndianaFever)
Coach Stephanie White asked for consistency and playing through adversity to achieve the title dream. The 2019 rookie also shared the same views and called for a response from the side in the absence of their superstar player. The win gives them confidence as they face the struggling and desperate Chicago Sky next.

With the forward’s day-to-day update hint, fans will hope to see Clark in action soon. The team will face the Chicago Sky next at the United Center on July 27. The main challenge will be contending with the double-double powerhouse Angel Reese, with or without the team’s starting guard in the lineup.
Sophie Cunningham Is A Self-Proclaimed Guardian Angel For Caitlin Clark
When the former Mercury star signed with the Indiana Fever as a free agent, she faced a familiar and expected question. “How would you see yourself playing with the 2024 Rookie of the Year?” She showed excitement as she had been vocal about her support for CC, both on and off the court, before joining the side. She highlighted the Fever guard’s impact on the game. Also emphasized the 2024 rookie’s ability to draw defenders and create opportunities for her teammates.
Cunningham also acknowledges Clark’s challenges, including the physical play and the need for the team to adjust when she is on and off the court. She famously showed her tough side, taking revenge for a foul on the former Iowa star during the game against the Connecticut Sun.

There were also many instances in the season when the Missouri forward stood up for her teammate in the games. She argued with the officials and even with opponents during games. Yet, understanding the primary task at hand, she emphasizes the importance of consistency and mental preparation for the team, regardless of whether Clark is playing.
