The NFL fanbase saw the reigning finalist, the Kansas City Chiefs, eliminated from the playoffs. This was shocking, watching the three-time champions in the last six seasons go out so early in the season. Despite their fall, WNBA star Sophie Cunningham showed her support to the Chiefs.
She mentioned that the franchise spoiled its fanbase with the wins, and this could be an opportunity to rethink the future. Moreover, the player supported megastar QB Patrick Mahomes, who left the game due to an ACL injury.

Sophie Cunningham Asks Chiefs For Recruitment
The 30-year-old Chiefs’ quarterback still has a lot in his tank and has been a key figure for the franchise’s recent dominance. The three-time Super Bowl MVP is just behind legend Tom Brady (5) in accolades and has a chance to overtake the former Patriots man. While Travis Kelce’s age shocked Cunningham, she asked for a shrewd signing to continue the Chiefs’ dynasty.
On her ‘Show Me Something’ podcast, Cunningham said, “I do think that this is just a year. And I think that sometimes you need these years to be re-motivated (light) a fire under your butt. I want us to finish the season with no more injuries. Like, I want other players to go out there and kick ass, and maybe some of them will get an extended contract.”
“There’s so much more positives that can come from the season with opportunities for other players. I am curious to see what’s going to happen, because I do think that it’s time to start stacking people up around Mahomes,” Cunningham added.

While the Chiefs could bounce back from the current setback, Mahomes could return as early as the start of the 2026 regular season if rehab goes accordingly.
On Cunningham’s professional front, the player is an unrestricted free agent and can join any team. Cunningham put forward one condition before signing any contract with the WNBA franchise, as she is preparing for her ‘final’ contract.
Sophie Cunningham’s Ready To Leave WNBA
Ahead of the 2026 season, the former Missouri star answered the call from Project B. While she already made her intentions clear about joining the new 5-on-5 league, she now mentioned that she could leave the WNBA if Project B succeeds.
“You just get cultured, it’s fun. And I’ve missed it, but I also don’t want to play around. My body can’t handle it. I have other things I want to do that I’m interested in, and so this just gives me the perfect opportunity to go play, get cultured, see the world, but also be able to come home and still experience what I want to experience,” said Cunningham.
The offer from the new league is very intriguing as many WNBA superstars join the competitor league, which will start from December 2026.
