The WNBA teams might stop the Indiana Fever, but never the players. After Sophie Cunningham was caught giving a pep talk to Lexie Hull, the star guard is now at the league referees.
Sidelined by a torn MCL, Soph is still a vocal force on the Fever’s bench. After the Game 2 loss, she didn’t hold back on the WNBA’s refereeing mess during the team’s semifinal clash with the Las Vegas Aces.
Sophie Cunningham Lashes Out At WNBA Refs
Despite being out alongside Clark, Cunningham’s bond with her teammate shines through. The star guard has been there with the team, hyping them up during tough plays and shouting out at the opponents if and when needed.

Recently, she didn’t mince words on ‘The Young Man and the Three,’ saying there’s a wider group of people in the league getting agitated at the league’s way of officiating the plays.
“I promise you, everyone in our league feels that way, and I’m just kind of the only one who says something,” she said.

This came after the Fever’s growing frustration after a 90-68 Game 2 blowout that tied the series 1-1. Cunningham’s outspoken take on inconsistent officiating perfectly aligned with coach Stephanie White’s postgame gripes and Caitlin Clark’s $200 fine for a ref jab.
Sophie Cunningham Opens Up On Teaming Up With Caitlin Clark
While most of the league is talking about how the WNBA could improve the officiating, Cunningham took some time to reflect on how it feels like playing along her favorite teammate, Catilin Clark.
Other than gushing about Clark, calling her a “generational talent,” she also called her a “big kid” with a “dweeb” charm that makes her a locker room favorite.
“She’s just a big kid. She is so phenomenal and so elite at her craft, a generational talent. I don’t think I have to hype her up anymore. She’s probably the biggest dork I’ve ever met,” Cunningham said.
However, traded to Indiana on January 31, Cunningham bonded fast with Clark, likening her to a “little cousin” who’s annoying yet elite, with a basketball IQ “four steps ahead of everyone else.”
