The Indiana Fever came back to their winning ways recently. Facing off against the Connecticut Sun, Indiana delivered a spirited performance to win the game 99-93. But all of the celebrations were muted as the Fever suffered yet another injury setback. And this time, it was none other than Sophie Cunningham.
Ever since joining the team this season, Cunningham has been a mainstay. With her aggressive and physical style of play, the 28-year-old emerged as a pivotal figure for the team. However, during a nasty clash with a Sun player, the former Missouri star went down hard on the ground. Surely, this was the last thing Fever wanted, as they already have no return timeline for Caitlin Clark’s injury. And as speculations mounted, her sister took to social media and blasted the league’s officials.
Sophie Cunningham’s Sister Gets Angry With WNBA Officiating
Cunningham was on the court for merely ten minutes when the tragedy struck. Trying to tussle for the ball, the 28-year-old clashed with Sun forward Bria Hartley. And immediately, the entire arena knew that things did not look good. Soon after making contact, the Fever star went down on the floor. As she clutched her right knee and cried in pain, medical professionals helped her out of the court.
Looking at such a situation, the 28-year-old’s sister, Lindsey Cunningham, could not keep calm. Taking to her X account, Lindsey blasted the league for not hiring appropriately qualified officials who could protect the athletes.
“@WNBA maybe you should focus less on fining players for commenting on your poor officiating & more about hiring officials that are able to call a consistent game and protect your athletes. Pathetic. Praying for you Sophie,” Lindsey wrote.

Surely, it goes without saying that the frustration and anger were very visible. But this was not the first time the WNBA’s officiating has been questioned. Golden State Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase recently highlighted ongoing WNBA officiating issues following a loss against the Aces. And Cunningham herself, too, was pretty much vocal about the same. As a result, she received a hefty fine from the WNBA!

Sophie Cunningham Fined $1500 By The WNBA For Speaking Against Officials
Cunningham was not quite pleased with how things were shaping up on the court, especially with the officials. Appearing on an earlier episode of the ‘Show Me Something’ podcast, the 28-year-old had some strong words for the WNBA officials. However, this did not sit well with the league, and they fined her $1500. Speaking about the incident, the Fever star gave her honest reactions.
“They fined me $1,500. I’m like, ‘This is just the beginning.’ I’m like, ‘You’re kidding.’ They email our GM, and she pulls me aside and says, ‘Sophie, I’ve got to talk to you,’ and this is in front of everybody. I’m like, ‘What did I do now?’ And just smiled and she goes, ‘Hey, they’re going to fine you again,‘“ Cunningham said.

However, the fine did not help Cunningham tone down. She once again bashed the officials for allegedly favoring Paige Bueckers during their 80-81 loss to Dallas. And now, with the 28-year-old suffering a gruesome injury, the talk about officiating in the WNBA has only gotten louder.
