After 16 losses in a row, the Indiana Fever managed back-to-back wins over the Las Vegas Aces. Both victories were without their star player, Caitlin Clark. These morale booster and decisive steps are taking them closer to postseason qualification. But Coach Stephanie White sees room for improvement.
Entering her 10th season as head coach, White was happy about the win, yet she found some shortfalls and poor execution from her players. In the postgame interview, the coach let the players know about her views on those ‘missed chances’.
Stephanie White Wants Indiana Fever Player To Stay Consistent
Right from her training day with the Fever roster, the 48-year-old coach stressed ‘consistency’ as key to success. In a recent win over the Las Vegas Aces, the team showed great character coming back from a six-point deficit and holding off the opposition in the second half. But the former Fever player and coach was not happy with the first-half efforts.
“I felt like our bench in the second half was really good defensively. In the first half, I didn’t feel that way. You got to be ready to come in, and you got to be ready to guard your matchup and execute the game plan. You know, we have depth for a reason. We’ve got quality depth, and we’ve got to be able to use it. So, if fatigue is a factor in execution, then they just need to ask for a sub. And I’ll get them out and get them back in.” White said in a press conference (Via YouTube/IndianaFever).
The team allowed 23 points in the second quarter, scoring just 17. There were also many turnovers in the first half. The coach pointed that out while praising the second-half performance. She added that a possession can change the game, and players need to value each possession.
The side won the game against the Aces thanks to the performances of Aari McDonald, Kelsey Mitchell, and Natasha Howard. The franchise will face another challenge in Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky on July 27. The United Center will host the mega fixture, and the visitors have won both their matchups this season.

Indiana Fever’s Inconsistency Could Be Major Issue In Playoffs
In a 44-game season, a slip-up in one or two games is permissible with a chance to recover in the next games. But the playoffs are a different story altogether. The top eight teams advance to a series of games to win the WNBA title.

If the postseason starts with the same team positions, the Fever (sixth seed) will face tough opponents in the first round in the Phoenix Mercury (third seed). Although Caitlin Clark and co are yet to face Alyssa Thomas’ consistent side, the matchups are worrisome. Even the rounds ahead are challenging. Teams like the Defending Champions, New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx have shown remarkable consistency and flawless performances this season.
As White mentioned in her postgame interview, a sense of urgency, a solid defensive game, and attention to detail will be crucial in those conditions. Luckily for the side, the 2024 Rookie of the Year will be back in the lineup, which could change the dynamics of the game.
