The 2026 WNBA draft has garnered a lot of attention. Following months of negotiations and back-and-forth between the players, things finally came to a satisfactory end. And despite the WNBA’s rushed timeline, it looks like the hype is catching up just in time. After all, this year’s draft comes stacked with talent.
Following Azzi Fudd’s much-awaited reunion with Paige Bueckers, the attention shifted to the remaining stars. And one among them was definitely the Spanish sensation, Awa Fam. The 19-year-old was listed as one of the top prospects this year. And quite expectedly, she was called within the top bracket.

Seattle Storm General Manager Thrilled To Acquire Awa Fam
Coming in as the No. 3 overall pick this year, it was the Seattle Storm who bagged the prized possession of Fam. Surprisingly, their latest choice indicates that the franchise has been heavily banking on young, fresh talent in recent times. For example, last year, the Storm selected Dominique Malonga as the second overall pick after Bueckers.
Now, as the Spanish star prepares to take the WNBA by storm, Talisa Rhea appears highly excited. “We’re thrilled to welcome Awa to Seattle. We’ve been watching Awa emerge as one of the most dynamic young talents in the world. She’s already gained valuable experience competing professionally internationally and has tremendous upside. Awa will be an important part of our future and what we’re building in Seattle,” Rhea said via a press release.

Playing for the Valencia Basketball Club in the EuroLeague, the 6’4” star had some impressive performances for her team. Averaging seven points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.3 assists this season, the Alicante-born can make a lasting impact right from the word go.

Getting Fam would be a sigh of relief for Storm fans. That’s because the likes of Skylar Diggins, Gabby Williams, Erica Wheeler, Nneka Ogwumike, and Brittney Sykes have all left during free agency.
Meanwhile, coming back to the Spanish sensation, she already had yet another major update outside of the WNBA.
Awa Fam Joins Project B As Tensions Rise In WNBA
The stakes of Fam are going sky high at the moment. Even before she appeared in the WNBA draft, the 19-year-old joined hands with the brand new league, Project B. The league conveyed the news through a social media post. Reacting to the update, the EuroLeague star cited her new venture as something ‘special.’
“I’m really excited. Any time you get the chance to be part of something new and competitive, it’s special. Project B feels like a place where the game is continuing to grow, and I’m grateful to be part of that from the beginning. What stood out to me was the vision. It’s about high-level basketball, but also about investing in players and pushing the women’s game forward. That combination made it an easy decision for me,” Fam told ‘Associated Press’ via an email.

And as more and more players keep signing for Project B, the WNBA does not look comfortable. Despite Project B assuring that its schedule would not clash with the WNBA, the massive financial offers could still push the league into doldrums.
