Speaking of WNBA legends, the one name that unmistakably comes to everyone’s mind is Sue Bird. Even after retiring from the sport, her constant voice has helped female basketball grow significantly. Due to her iconic career, Bird was inducted into the 2025 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
Playing for the UConn Huskies, Bird had been phenomenal in her NCAA career. And as she continued the good work in the WNBA, she soon became a force to be reckoned with. Now, honoring her legendary career, the Huskies decided to retire Bird’s No. 10 jersey.
And as the fans showered her with love, things soon turned pretty much emotional for the WNBA legend, too.

After a long time, Bird came back to Harry A. Gampel Pavilion this Sunday. The occasion? Well, the Huskies celebrated and honored one of their most decorated athletes in basketball history. As UConn clashed against DePaul, Bird had a heartwarming speech that she delivered before the start of the game.
Getting emotional over the newly announced honor, Bird stated, “This is home. This is where it started. So to see what we are about to see, my number up in the rafters, the rafters next to these other legends, it’s an incredible, incredible honor.”

Surely, Bird does deserve all the praise she got. While she not only won two national titles for the Huskies, the legendary player also won four WNBA titles to add to her embellished crown.
And quite fittingly, as Bird had her jersey retired, the Huskies beat DePaul with a 102-35 scoreline. Meanwhile, hailing Bird’s greatness, Geno Auriemma recently lauded her as the greatest point guard.
