Sue Bird has been one of the biggest names in the WNBA realm. Displaying some impeccable skill sets on the hardwood, the 44-year-old went on to become a legend. And to truly honor her legacy, Bird, along with Maya Moore and Sylvia Fowles, got HOF honors. As the ceremony took place, the WNBA legend came up with a playful jab at her former coach, Geno Auriemma.
Bird has been having a phenomenal season so far. Having won the Olympic medal five times, her former team, the Seattle Storm, made a unique gesture for their champion guard. The franchise unveiled a statue of the legend just outside the Climate Pledge Arena. And now, to make things more memorable, the former Storm star got tricky about Auriemma.
Sue Bird Trolls Geno Auriemma With A Playful Jab
The relationship between Auriemma and Bird runs quite deep. Their interaction dates back to Bird’s college days when the duo was part of the UConn Huskies. Together, the coach-student pair had some incredible success. They won two national championships before Bird left the NCAA to cater to her WNBA commitments. Meanwhile, after so many years, as Bird was delivering her Hall of Fame induction speech, the four-time WNBA champion took the opportunity to take a lighthearted dig at Auriemma.

“I mean, I guess you gave a lot of advice, because you talk a lot. But this was really the one I remember,” Bird said to Auriemma. “You know, it’s not often you get to take shots [at Auriemma], and he doesn’t have a mic to come back.”

Surely, such an act shows how strong the bond is between the two. Auriemma also heaped praises on his five-star student when Storm unveiled her statue. Meanwhile, even after retirement, the 44-year-old has kept up with recent WNBA happenings. Only recently, Bird praised Angel Reese after the latter joined TOGETHXR ownership. And not only that, she also voiced her support for Paige Bueckers.

Sue Bird Wants More Media Attention For Paige Bueckers
Paige Bueckers has set the WNBA stage on fire. Coming in as the number one overall pick, the 23-year-old has proved that she is every bit worth the hype. Playing some sublime basketball, the Dallas Wings’ star has overtaken the likes of Caitlin Clark on several occasions. Thus, looking at the same, Bird feels that the media focuses too much on Clark. Instead, she wants more spotlight on Bueckers.

“I think Paige is really popular... it’s specific. I think…what I would say that I’m noticing that’s lacking, not just Paige…honestly, everyone in the WNBA. Including Caitlin! I know she’s not playing right now. It’s like…where is the ‘more?’” Bird said.
Thus, it is evident that even after bidding adieu to the game, the WNBA legend is very much active. Now, with a Hall of Famer status, fans would be excited to find out what her next step would be.
