The year 2025 had been very special for Sue Bird, as the player received many acknowledgements following her retirement in 2022. Earlier in August, she became the first WNBA icon immortalized in bronze, and she received the Naismith Hall of Fame nod, and now her alma mater has retired her jersey in a special ceremony.
While the star won multiple championships at every professional level, her gameplay and resilience remained many fans’ favourite aspect bout her. It was, therefore, natural that many fans reacted to the emotional jersey retirement ceremony.

Fans Show Love For Sue Bird as UConn Huskies Retire Her Jersey
The 45-year-old guard received a standing ovation at Gampel Pavilion as her No. 10 jersey was officially retired by UConn. The star won two NCAA Championships for the program and scored 1,378 points with 585 assists in four seasons.
Sue Bird got emotional on the honor as she said, “This is home. This is where it started. So to see what we are about to see, my number up in the rafters, the rafters next to these other legends, it’s an incredible, incredible honor. Hard to put into words.” The UConn Huskies’ official account also shared the update on social media, announcing “No. 10 is officially retired 💙”
Fans also showed love for the former All-Star as they commented on the post shared by UConn.

The legendary star holds multiple records that support Auriemma’s claim: as Bird is the WNBA’s all-time assist leader (3,234), a 13-time All-Star, a four-time WNBA champion with the Seattle Storm, and a five-time Gold Medal winner with the USA National team.
