The Indiana Fever hit a rough patch in their playoff push, and it wasn’t just the scoreboard that stung. In a lopsided 95-60 loss to the Phoenix Mercury last night, the Fever saw their backup point guard, Sydney Colson, go down with a scary non-contact injury.
With the team already missing star Caitlin Clark, this latest blow has fans worried about Indiana’s backcourt depth. All of this while they fight to stay in the postseason race at 17-14.
Sydney Colson Helped Off Court After No-Contact Injury
It was a gut-wrenching moment with just 44 seconds left in the first quarter. Colson, a 36-year-old veteran and two-time WNBA champion, slipped while chasing a rebound. Her left knee, unfortunately, buckled as she hit the floor hard. The pain was clear on her face, and coach Stephanie White called an immediate timeout.
She was helped off the court by Fever trainer Todd Champlin and Bri Turner, putting no weight on her left leg.

Teammates and staff shielded her with towels as trainer Todd Champlin and forward Brianna Turner helped her off the court. The visuals were not favorable for the Fever fans as she was unable to put weight on her left leg, per IndyStar’s Chloe Peterson. She was ruled out of the game.
Additionally, Colson’s injury couldn’t have come at a worse time. With Clark sidelined since July 16 with a groin injury and no clear return date, the Fever are already stretched thin at point guard. Colson, who signed a one-year deal this offseason, has been a steady force off the bench, averaging 2.4 points and 2.1 assists in 13.9 minutes across 29 games.
Her experience and energy have been crucial, especially without Clark’s playmaking. Now, Aari McDonald is the only healthy true point guard, and things got dicier when she limped off with a right foot injury in the fourth quarter, per IndyStar.

Fever Coach Shares Update On Sydney Colson
While the injury was a no-contact one, it looked concerning. Fever coach White didn’t have updates on either player postgame. According to her, both would go under evaluation back in Indianapolis.
“We’ll get more evaluation when we get home tomorrow then we’ll see where we are,” she said (via Twitter/@chloepeterson67)
If Colson and McDonald miss time, Kelsey Mitchell or Sophie Cunningham might have to play point, pulling them out of their natural roles. The Fever could also sign a hardship player to fill the gap.

Despite the loss, Sophie Cunningham shone in her return to Phoenix and dropped 18 points, including five threes. Kelsey Mitchell added 12, but the Fever’s offense struggled, shooting just 36.2% against a Mercury squad led by Alyssa Thomas’s historic third straight triple-double (18 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists). DeWanna Bonner, a former Fever player, torched her old team for 23 points.
The Fever’s five-game win streak is now a two-game skid, and Colson’s injury adds uncertainty. Clark’ has recently been doing light rehab, but she’s not back to team drills yet, per Peterson. With a tough road ahead, Indiana needs their veterans to stay healthy to keep their playoff hopes alive.
