Hammon went on to play college basketball at Colorado State University (1995–1999), where she became the program’s all-time leading scorer with 2,740 career points. She was named an All-American, the WAC Player of the Year (1999), and led the Rams to their first Sweet 16 appearance in 1999. Despite her remarkable college career, Hammon went undrafted in the 1999 WNBA Draft, largely due to concerns about her size (5’6”).
Hammon signed with the New York Liberty as an undrafted free agent in 1999. She quickly became a fan favorite at Madison Square Garden, known for her clutch shooting and fearless style of play.
In 2007, Hammon was traded to the San Antonio Silver Stars, where she elevated her game to superstar level. That same year, she averaged a career-best 18.8 points and 5.0 assists per game, leading the Silver Stars to the WNBA Finals.

4× All-WNBA Team selection

Scored over 5,800 career points and dished out more than 1,500 assists
Hammon played until 2014, when she retired after suffering a torn ACL.
After retiring, Hammon immediately transitioned into coaching. She made history in 2014 when the San Antonio Spurs hired her as an assistant coach under Gregg Popovich, making her the first full-time female assistant in NBA history.
During her time with the Spurs:
She became the first woman to serve as head coach in an NBA Summer League, leading the Spurs to a championship in 2015.
On December 30, 2020, Hammon became the first woman to act as head coach in an NBA regular-season game after Popovich was ejected.
In 2022, Hammon became the head coach of the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA. She made an immediate impact, guiding the Aces to the 2022 WNBA Championship in her first year. In 2023, she led them to another title, cementing her status as one of the best coaches in the league.
