Early Life
Dearica Hamby was born on November 6, 1993, in Marietta, Georgia. She grew up excelling in multiple sports before focusing on basketball. At Wake Forest University (2011–2015), Hamby established herself as one of the top players in the ACC.
She finished her college career as Wake Forest’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder, earning All-ACC First Team honors in 2014 and 2015. Her dominance on the boards and scoring ability made her a clear WNBA prospect.
WNBA Career
Hamby was drafted 6th overall in the 2015 WNBA Draft by the San Antonio Stars (now the Las Vegas Aces). She quickly became known for her ability to provide a spark off the bench, earning back-to-back Sixth Woman of the Year awards in 2019 and 2020.
In 2020, she made one of the most iconic plays in WNBA playoff history, stealing an inbounds pass and hitting a game-winning shot to eliminate the Chicago Sky—known as the “Hamby Heave.”
She later won a WNBA Championship with the Las Vegas Aces in 2022, playing an important role as a veteran leader. In 2023, Hamby was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks, where she quickly became a starter and team leader.
By 2024, Hamby had her best career season, averaging 17.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game, earning her first All-Star start and recognition as one of the top forwards in the league.
