Early Life

Kayla Thornton grew up in El Paso, Texas, where she was a standout athlete from an early age. At Burges High School, she became known for her defensive toughness and leadership. Her college career at UTEP solidified her as one of the best players in program history. Thornton left UTEP as the school’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder, earning Conference USA Player of the Year honors in 2014.

WNBA Career

Thornton went undrafted in 2014 but signed with the Washington Mystics in 2015. After playing overseas and continuing to develop, she earned a spot with the Dallas Wings in 2017. Over several seasons in Dallas, she became known as a strong defender and reliable forward, often taking on tough assignments guarding the league’s best players.

In 2023, Thornton was traded to the New York Liberty, where she continues to play an important role. With stars like Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and Jonquel Jones on the roster, Thornton provides grit, defensive intensity, and veteran leadership. She helped the Liberty reach the 2023 WNBA Finals.
