Sue Bird is a retired American professional basketball player, widely considered one of the greatest point guards in basketball history. Suzanne Brigit Bird, known as Sue Bird, was born on October 16, 1980, in Syosset, New York. She excelled at Syosset High School before transferring to Christ the King Regional High School in Queens, a powerhouse in girls’ basketball. By her senior year, Bird was named the New York State Player of the Year, which cemented her as one of the top recruits in the nation.
Bird attended the University of Connecticut (1998–2002), where she became part of one of the most dominant college teams in history. Under coach Geno Auriemma, she led the Huskies to two NCAA Championships (2000, 2002). She finished her UConn career as a two-time Nancy Lieberman Award winner (nation’s top point guard) and was later named to the UConn Basketball All-Century Team.
Draft & Rookie Season (2002): Bird was selected 1st overall in the 2002 WNBA Draft by the Seattle Storm. She made an immediate impact, finishing as a finalist for Rookie of the Year.
Championships: Bird helped lead the Storm to four WNBA titles (2004, 2010, 2018, 2020), often serving as the floor general and clutch playmaker.
