With the WNBA in its offseason, most of the stars are currently abroad, playing overseas. And among them, the Australian women’s basketball league, the WNBL, has been gaining a lot of traction recently.
Only recently, it was Brianna Turner who bagged a new contract with the Perth Lynx following a strong showing for the Indiana Fever. And not only Turner, but several renowned faces have also transitioned to playing in Australian soils in the offseason.
However, in one of the most notable moments, Alanna Smith got a warm token of honor from one of the WNBL sides. In a recent announcement, it was revealed that Smith is now the official club ambassador of the Tasmania Jewels.

Alanna Smith Elated After Special Honor From Tasmania Jewels
As the Jewels had their official team name and brand launch on Tuesday, Smith was officially named as the club’s official ambassador. This was a pretty special gesture for Smith, as she was born and brought up in Tasmania.
Detailing about Smith’s role, she will be helping the franchise as part of supporting Jewels’ mission to grow the sport all across the state. The WNBA star will also be in charge of promoting the Tasmanian brand to global audiences and will also work on the engagement with fans.
Surely, Smith seemed elated after her incredible honor. “I’m incredibly honoured to become an ambassador for the Tasmania Jewels. It’s so special to now have a WNBL team in my home state, and I’m excited to help champion the team, connect with young players, and be part of building something meaningful for women’s sport in the state.”

Jewels’ CEO Christine Finnegan, too, seemed overly excited to have Smith on board. Meanwhile, putting on a stellar show this year, Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve heaped praises on Smith.
Cheryl Reeve Pushed Alanna Smith Heavily For The Defensive Player Of The Year
The Minnesota Lynx have always been a strong defensive outfit. Back in 2024, it was Napheesa Collier’s incredible defense that led the Lynx to an incredible run. This year, too, the team looked solid. And while they led others in points in the regular season, the defensive ratings, too, were pretty solid.

Speaking about the same, Reeves gave Smith most of the credit for Minnesota’s iron defense. “Her [Alanna] and Phee, the first day that they played defense together, their synergy was terrific. Every move that Phee made, Lan knew where to be and play off her. Alanna’s just really smart. Really, really smart, and would absolutely be my choice for Defensive Player of the Year,” Reeve said in the post-game interview (Via YT/MinnesotaLynx).
Surely, things are looking pretty rosy for the Lynx’s star at the moment. Now, with a newly vested responsibility, fans will be looking to see how Smith plays in the next season.
