The WNBA-CBA talks have been making the headlines for quite some time now. As the players are demanding equal pay, the deadline has been pushed back twice now. However, despite multiple offers coming from the front office, the stalemate has not been resolved yet.
Instead, the players’ frustrations have grown after going through the conditions proposed by the WNBA. For example, Courtney Williams recently stated that WNBA priorities are hurting players.
However, despite all the clouds of uncertainty hovering, the league is taking steps towards preparing for the next season. And to give the fans something to cheer for, Teaira McCowan is back.

Teaira McCowan Is Coming Back To The WNBA
With the league expanding this year, the likes of Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire have already started to build their roster. As the Tempo roped in Sandy Brondello as their head coach. In fact, they aren’t the only expansion team trying to cover all their bases.
According to a recent report, McCowan is all set to make a comeback to the W. For the uninitiated, McCowan was drafted as the 3rd overall pick back in 2019. While playing for the Dallas Wings, the WNBA star earned recognition as one of the league’s biggest prospects. And now, with a new season approaching, reports suggest she could join the Fire.
“Teaira McCowan introduces Portland a rare combination of size and intimidation. Standing tall with exceptional wingspan, she alters opponents’ approaches to the rim simply by being present. Offensively, McCowan is effective in pick-and-roll finishes, offensive rebounds, and high-percentage post scoring. Her scoring may be role-specific, but the impact is substantial, particularly in crunch moments,” Clutchpoints’ Jess Koffie wrote.

Looking back at her career, McCowan was initially a part of the Indiana Fever roster. However, after three years, the team traded her to the Wings. And in mid-2025, the league waived McCowan. Meanwhile, trying to add quality to the roster, the Fire appointed Alex Sarama and Sylvia Fowles as coaches.
Alex Sarama And Sylvia Fowles To Take Charge Of The Portland Fire
In a recent announcement, the Fire hired Sarama as their head coach. While this will be his first time coaching for the WNBA, Sarama is a known name in the coaching realm.

He has had stints with the NBA, EMEA, Paris Basketball, Rip City Remix, and the London Lions. However, his biggest break so far has been his term as the Cleveland Cavaliers’ assistant coach.
And supporting him in his role will be WNBA legend Sylvia Fowles. Expected to enrich the team with her vast experience, Fowles will be assisting Sarama in making the most of their debut year.
