The Connecticut Sun are down, but not out. The bottom-placed franchise has shown great character, taking over the playoff-aspirant expansion team, the Golden State Valkyries. The dominant 95-64 win over the ninth-placed opponent was a statement win for them at the Mohegan Arena. Tina Charles led the way for her side with 24 points and six rebounds.
She put up an excellent offensive performance, with over 72% accuracy from the field, and she also led the game in scoring. The 14-year veteran also rewrote WNBA history, challenging the likes of All-time leader Diana Taurasi.

On a four-game losing streak, the hosts were under pressure to deliver against the surging Valks. The visitors recorded an 87-63 win the last time they faced each other at the Chase Center. The odds were against the Connecticut franchise, which needed an inspiring performance from its stars.
The 36-year-old forward had been their offensive spark throughout the season and delivered again at home. Scoring 24 points in just 19 minutes, she controlled the momentum of the game and recorded her 185th 20+ points game. That’s the second most in the league, just behind the all-time leading scorer, Diana Taurasi.
She also reached the 395-game mark with 10 or more points. That puts her in third position behind Taurasi and Tina Thompson. The Mercury icon has 488 games, while the Houston Comets rookies had 404 with double-digit scores.
After the win, the Connecticut Sun improved its season record to 4-20 and will face the Seattle Storm next at home on July 28. The Valks are still in the hunt for a playoff spot and occupy ninth place in the standings with an 11-13 record.

Tina Charles Delivering For Connecticut Sun
The Sun franchise had a torrid season right from the start. Before the 2025 season, new faces were added to the lineup and even in the front office. After six consecutive playoff appearances, the side faced multiple challenges in the 2025 season.

They built a team around the two-time scoring champion, putting her at the focal point of the offence. The former UConn star lived up to the expectations, leading the side in scoring (16 points per game) and rebounding (5.8 rebounds per game). Marina Mabrey is the only other player in the double-figure scoring average for the side, highlighting the team’s offensive struggles.
While the postseason appearance would be a far-fetched dream for them, the Sun could pocket some wins, giving them confidence and helping their leader climb up the WNBA all-time stats.
