After the back-to-back mega seasons for the WNBA, the league is entering its most important season in its transition phase. The addition of the teams is expanding its horizon, new broadcast deals are backing them financially, and the Current CBA talks are shaping up the future of players and the league. Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire will join the mix, making the free agency, draft, and even the trades more interesting in the offseason.
Among these two teams, the Northerners have been very aggressive in their pursuit. Sandy Brondello’s signing would give Toronto Tempo one major free agency advantage nobody is talking about. And speaking of the advantage, the side would opt for players with Canadian roots in its expansion draft, which would tie them even closer to the franchise.
Toronto Tempo Targets 2026 With Canadian Roots
The 2026 free agency already has a host of champions, experienced players and All-stars available for signing, which makes every decision critical for every franchise. If the Toronto team opts to choose players with Canadian roots, they could make use of the expansion draft and even free agency to recruit experienced Canadians.
The following are the top Canadian stars available in the WNBA whom the Tempo side could target.
4. Bridget Carleton

One of the most sought-after targets would be the Lynx experienced forward Carleton. After four games with the Connecticut Sun, the former Iowa State player found success with the Minnesota Lynx. With an increase in her role under Cheryl Reeve, Carleton earned a starting role on the team and became a key contributor to its success so far.
While the franchise will aim for a title after coming close for two consecutive seasons, it will look for major upgrades around Napheesa Collier. Leaving a few top players like Carleton available in the expansion draft. Her experience, versatility, and Canadian roots make her a prime target for the Tempo team.

3. Kia Nurse
Another key piece at the guard position would be Kia Nurse. The Chicago franchise looked to use her as a building block for the future, but the plan fell flat on the floor, and now it will be in a seller’s market for a major reshuffle.

The 2019 All-Star also loves a fresh start, and heading back home would be an ideal start. In seven seasons, she played in five different side,s and finding stability would allow her to develop even better. Even though her numbers are not flashy, her experience could make her a strong voice in the locker room – just what the new franchise would look to have.
2. Aaliyah Edwards
The Ontario-born star is entering her second season in the league and has already made her mark with some solid performances in the limited game time. The Valkyries chose similar players, like Kate Martin, who thrived with a change in the role, and the Toronto side could expect the same from the 24-year-old star.

What’s more encouraging is that Aaliyah Edwards’ courtside appearance at the Raptors Game ignites Toronto Tempo linkup. Even though she is still under a rookie contract, the Tempo could take her in the expansion draft. She would also love to play under Brondello’s system, who runs offense through the forwards.
1. Laeticia Amihere

The Valkyries used their waiver claim to resign the 14-year-old forward. Amihere will be a reserved free agent, meaning that the Golden State Valkyries hold exclusive negotiating rights. However, it’s unlikely that the Bay Area team would use that option, given that they waived her once already this season and will be aiming for an even stronger forward at the position.
This is where the Toronto team can swoop in and add a role player at a rookie contract. The player will also have the opportunity to showcase her abilities with the new team and may help the ‘home side’ win the title as well.
