The WNBA is buzzing at the moment. Just a few weeks back, the 2026 season had nothing going on with the CBA stalemate. But within days, the season has sprung back to life. Firstly, the latest CBA deal has names like Paige Bueckers excited. Next up, after having missed significant gametime last year, Caitlin Clark is all fit and fine to rock this year.
Add to that the blockbuster trade of Angel Reese that saw her join the Atlanta Dream. Well, it’s all happening in the WNBA at the moment. And if all this was not enough, another intriguing piece of news has just come in from the Washington Mystics. On the very first day of free agency, the Mystics parted ways with their general manager.

Why Did The Washington Mystics Part Ways With Jamila Wideman?
The WNBA season has not yet started, and already the shakeups are coming in thick and fast. On the very first day of free agency, the Mystics decided to sever their relationship with General Manager Jamila Wideman. Stating ‘strategic differences,’ Wideman was let go after just one season at the helm. Before joining Washington in 2024, Wideman had served six years with the NBA.
“Jamila has a long history in professional basketball, made many thoughtful contributions to the Mystics, and we are thankful for the time and work she devoted to the team,” President Michael Winger’s official statement read.

Currently, with a major void created in the front office, head coach Sydney Johnson is expected to regain control of day-to-day operations. Johnson will also have the help of the existing support staff.
Meanwhile, as things look a little complicated, there is a lot for the team to figure out.
How Will The Washington Mystics Thrive Without Their General Manager?

Wideman’s absence means that the team will be approaching the WNBA Draft without a general manager. But despite the drawback, Johnson would be keen on landing some quality picks. Currently, the team owns three first-round picks. The Mystics must use them wisely in order to build a strong team.
Recently, stressing on what exactly the Mystics’ roster needs, Shakira Austin said, “I definitely agree that I haven’t scratched the surface at all with what I can do. I’ve just been playing with a great point guard. I haven’t really played with one in a long time. So, just getting some easy stuff, but there’s definitely a lot more that I want to capitalize on.”
