It seems nothing is going well for A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces this season after losing to the New York Liberty, 87-78, at Barclays Center on Tuesday.
With the defeat, the Aces dropped to 9-10. It’s an uncharacteristic record for a team that has been a perennial contender for several years now. Las Vegas coach Becky Hammon has already spoken about the need to find their identity. That, however, remains to be seen.
The loss to the Liberty could also be extra costly for the Aces. Go-to player Wilson suffered a right wrist injury in the second quarter and didn’t return to the game.
Update On A’ja Wilson’s Right Wrist Injury
The 28-year-old Wilson drove to the left side of the lane for a layup but was challenged by Liberty forward Leonie Fiebich. Wilson missed the shot and fell hard on the floor. Her right wrist appeared to fold under her.

She was visibly in pain, writhing on the court, as her teammates surrounded her with towels to give her privacy.
It was a scary sight for the Aces, and the fans swiftly grew concerned.

According to Aces coach Becky Hammon, after the game, there’s still no clear update yet on the status of the three-time MVP. She needs to undergo an MRI on Wednesday, as reported by ESPN’s Kendra Andrews.
Wilson only played 14 minutes, finishing with two points, four rebounds, and two assists.
Stepping Up In The Possible Absence of A’ja Wilson
The Aces are keeping their fingers crossed that Wilson’s setback isn’t that serious. With the team still in the middle of the pack, losing its best two-way player for an extended period will only compound the woes.
Las Vegas is currently tied with the Washington Mystics in eighth place in the team standings.

Wilson has been prolific as ever, averaging team-highs of 21.9 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.8 steals, and 2.6 blocks. It’s tough for one player to duplicate those, and the Aces might try a committee consisting of Jewell Loyd, Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, and NaLyssa Smith to fill the void.
Wilson has been one of the more durable players in the WNBA, missing only six games in the last three seasons.
Las Vegas will return to action on Wednesday against Washington before taking on the Golden State Valkyries on Saturday.
